From Republicans, a Parting Slap at Bob Dole and Disabled Americans
The New York Times ^ | December 4, 2012 | Lawrence Downes

Posted on 12/04/2012 10:52:21 PM PST by Faith Presses On

Former Senator Bob Dole, 89 years old and in a wheelchair, went onto to the floor of the Senate today to urge his former colleagues to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities. Mr. Dole, a disabled veteran, has been one of the leading voices urging ratification of the treaty, which seeks to bring the world closer to the high standard set by the Americans with Disabilities Act, the landmark civil-rights law enacted under President George H.W. Bush.

I tried adding two comments on Democrats and Terri Schiavo, and the NYT wouldn't accept them.

Say what? The US has to accept this in order to get the rest of the world to think about better accommodations for the handicapped?

I double-posted this I think because nothing was coming up but a blank screen after I hit post. Anyway, I registered there and confirmed my email, and also tried adding two comments and apparently the NYT wouldn’t post them. Here are the comments:

-— Good for the GOP! The atheist NYT editorial page is as left-wing as you can get. America doesn’t want to become a state within the UN.

On disability rights (DR), what about the Terri Schiavo case???

DR groups backed government intervention in the case because they’d been pushing for a law just like it, for federal review in cases where a person’s wishes weren’t clear, which by law they should be. Terri Schiavo’s “wish to die” was recalled years after her collapse by her husband, living with another woman then, and also from two of HIS relatives. And even if true, they were only off-the-cuff remarks about elderly people who’d just died after brief illnesses. DR activists pushed for a federal review in such cases because guardians can have conflicts of interest and they saw it as an equal protection matter. They also pointed out that people may say they don’t want to live like Schiavo, but that view often changes once someone suffers an injury. AND, just recently a doctor communicated with someone in Schiavo’s PVS state through a brain scan. 2 nurses working with Schiavo at different times said she was responsive, but she got no therapy for years. Dehydration is a terrible way to die if you have any awareness.

And the myth that only the GOP back the Schiavo law is for politics. Tom Harkin, big on DR, was right there for it, even right after Terri’s death. But nothing was done because of push polls and media lies that killed support for protecting the disabled.

-— I went and looked at what the foundation of Joni Eareckson Tada, the well-known disabled Christian woman, said about this bill, and they are against it, saying that while it may help the disabled, it would do more harm than good.

Wow, this and the Republican primaries from 1996 is probably the only two times in history the NYT has supported Bob Dole on anything.

Why does America need a treaty with foreign nations about disabled individuals HERE? There is nothing in that issue that demands it be subject to a treaty.

Treaties are for when nations could come into conflict over an issue affecting them both. But treaties have no business being signed which deal with domestic matters.
That would be like signing a treaty which set speed limits on American roads.

Assinine.

Does this mean Obama will have trouble with all the other UN Treaties he is trying to push through?

Treaties are the way the rest of the world hopes to bypass our quaint legislative system and get us to spread the wealth around. Too bad our _resident is on their side. Bob Dole should know that nothing is as it seems in the land of the left, particularly the titles of laws and treaties. He should know we shouldn’t have to pass it to find out what’s in it.

All that the ADA did was to generate a virtual cornucopia of new law suits for the legal parasites (lawyers) and a new source of revenue from frivolous “disabled” claimants looking for new ways to sue everyone in sight.

Such B.S. And if I’m seeing this from the NYT, I know it’s bad.
Forget the U.N. Let individual countries pass their OWN legislation if they want to. I would be wary, suspicious and/or downright against any treaties originiating in the anti-U.S., anti-Israel organization.

The U.N. is past its sell by date.

UN=waste of time...

...and money. Every day causes me to flash back to those John Birch Society predictions of the 50s & 60s on where things like the UN were taking us and remember how some people said the JBS members were crazy paranoid lunatics. From my perspective, they're not looking like they were very far off the mark.

Also, speaking of time wasting, I remember being drafted onto a Model UN event in high school because I was involved in speech and debate competitions. The benefit of the intervening years has shown the folly of that.

I would surmise the “rights” the UN wants to secure for the disabled are the rights not to be born, and the rights to die by euthanasia

Anything program/treaty starts with “United Nations....” has ulterior power-grabbing intentions in the background.

Bob Dole...the UN-loving Free Trader Communist Globalist...and to think people once claimed he was “Conservative”

Knowing the UN....it was some declaration to euthanize the disabled.
