Pioneering jazz composer and pianist Dave Brubeck has died. Russell Gloyd, Brubeck's manager, says he died Wednesday morning of heart failure, after being stricken while on his way to a cardiology appointment with his son. He would have turned 92 on Thursday. The Dave Brubeck Quartet's pieces such as "Take Five" caught listeners' ears with exotic, challenging rhythms and became enduring standards. In 1954 he was the first modern jazz musician to be pictured on the cover of Time magazine. The quartet's 1959 album "Time Out" was the first ever million-selling jazz LP. "Take Five," a cut from that album by saxophonist Paul Desmond, became the group's signature theme.

Heaven just got a little jazzier. :^( He and Paul Desmond haven't jammed since the mid '70s.

Jazz greats never die. They just take five.

RIP Mr.Brubeck.

Don’t listen to many instrumentals but recognized Take Five with the first few notes.

Spelling: That would be Brubeck, NOT Bruebeck. Sorry ‘bout that. I have bandages on my fingers....cats. Makes typing a bit of a challenge.

I'm not a huge jazz guy. When I saw the headline, I was amazed that he was still alive. I mean "Sing, Sing, Sing" came out in 1936, right? Then I slap myself in the head and realize I'm thinking of Benny Goodman.

I actually own "Time Out" -- I like Brubeck's stuff and I'm embarassed I confused him with another jazz great.

RIP

Went to school with his son, Matthew. He came to the school one day unannounced to play with Matthew and his older brothers. Made me a jazz lover on the spot.
RIP, Dave.

One of my all-time favorite Brubeck recordings -- a live performance with the Dave Brubeck Quartet doing an extended version of one of his greatest hits.

Alto sax player Paul Desmond displays his witty brilliance on an extended blues solo, and Drummer Joe Morello turns in an amazing performance.

Blue Rondo a la Turk (concert performance)

Some songs take awhile to recognize when you hear them but Take Five was not among them...

Yes, ‘Take Five’ was his signature song but I always liked ‘Blue Rondo A La Turk’ as opposed to ‘Take Five’.
