Ex-Pa. trooper claims he was fired over Ebonics

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A black man contends he was fired at the end of his 18-month probationary period as a state trooper for false claims that he didn't properly write reports, and sometimes used Ebonics in doing so, according to a federal lawsuit.

The federal lawsuit was filed Tuesday on behalf of William Peake, 29, of Sewickley, who graduated from the police academy in May 2009 and soon after was stationed at the Uniontown barracks, which his attorney contends employs nearly all white troopers.

Peake was required to sign a termination letter contending he was let go for a "lack of solid job knowledge and basic police skills" and other "officer/public safety concerns" not spelled out in that letter in November 2010. According to the lawsuit, the reasons for Peake's firing have "no substantial basis in fact, and are not worthy of belief."

When you consider that thirty percent of all cops are ‘wannabe’ cops with no real skills....it’s best that we make them leave via any method possible....rather than keeping them on the force.

So he was terminated because he’s too stupid to do the job? What’s the problem?

Required to sign? Or what? Were they going to taze him until he complied, like the pregnant woman that didn’t want to sign her ticket?

Having worked with many Detroit based professionals, I’ve received countless written correspondence from them.. All (mostly well prepared and grammatically correct) However speaking to them is an excercise in discerning Ebonics. I’m can live with that as I deal with hundreds of emails per day and maybe 2-3 phone calls.
There is a professionalism that must be upheld in written correspondence

Peake was required to sign a termination letter...

I bet their first clue was him signing it with an "X".

The Pennsylvania State Police Academy is rather rigorous (at least physically) and lasts about 25 weeks, depending on the session.

I don’t think that a lot of ‘wannabe’ cops are going stick through it for that long.

"Plaintiff was judge by different and more harsh standards than other probationary troopers, because of his race,"

Is the reporter who wrote this article attempting to speak Ebonics too,?

Maybe both should go back to school and learn proper English so they can communicate affectively.

"The last bit of time in his employment, he had been restricted to desk work," he said. "How is that giving him an opportunity to perform his job?"

First he complains that he didn’t get any coaching or mentoring then he complains that he was put on a desk job.

If he was fired as he says for not filling in reports correctly and using improper language this was exactly the type of work he needed to do to improve his written communications skills. Desk work where he could improve his writing skills.

Guaranteed the staff at Hershey knew he was useless and needed to be terminated. He’s a Bolden plaintiff (or would be under the old consent decree) and a ‘preferred’ demographic. It seems that the policy has been to graduate them and let the field commands do the dirty work of firing them so that the academy isn’t constantly in court.

It sucks and drags the whole Department down and especially the minorities who really work and try.

Possibly something like: "you can resign with the reason being something innocuous, or we can do a full investigation which may lead to charges against you, your choice".

Is it a spelling issue? The word in question was spelled correctly, but used incorrectly.
