Treasury Secretary Timothy Geither told CNBC Wednesday that Republicans are "making a little bit of progress" in "fiscal cliff" talks but said the Obama administration was "absolutely" ready to go over the cliff if the GOP doesn't agree to raise tax rates on the wealthy.

With this statement, Geithner has essentially threatened the United States with economic catastrophe. It seems to me that men have been legally killed by the government for lesser threats.
There is a government policy that the US will not assassinate foreign leaders. However, Geithner is not a foreign leader, and if his threat is seen as a clear and present danger to the US, it might invoke mechanisms to remove such a threat.

How can anyone take seriously a president who hired a wealthy man who cheated on his taxes, Tim Geithner, to be his Treasury Secretary, yet now claims taxing the rich is so vital to America’s wellbeing it would be better to let the whole country go over a cliff than to not single out the rich for increased taxes?
In fact, the only way the U.S. Treasury will be able to take in more revenue from wealthy Americans if their taxes are increased is if every wealthy American has greater integrity than Tim Geithner. Otherwise, they will not pay an additional cent.
