U.S.-Approved Arms for Libya Rebels Fell Into Jihadisí Hands
New York Times ^ | December 5, 2012 | JAMES RISEN, MARK MAZZETTI and MICHAEL S. SCHMIDT

Posted on 12/06/2012 12:59:21 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

.........................The United States, which had only small numbers of C.I.A. officers in Libya during the tumult of the rebellion, provided little oversight of the arms shipments. Within weeks of endorsing Qatar’s plan to send weapons there in spring 2011, the White House began receiving reports that they were going to Islamic militant groups. They were “more antidemocratic, more hard-line, closer to an extreme version of Islam” than the main rebel alliance in Libya, said a former Defense Department official.

The Qatari assistance to fighters viewed as hostile by the United States demonstrates the Obama administration’s continuing struggles in dealing with the Arab Spring uprisings, as it tries to support popular protest movements while avoiding American military entanglements. Relying on surrogates allows the United States to keep its fingerprints off operations, but also means they may play out in ways that conflict with American interests.

“To do this right, you have to have on-the-ground intelligence and you have to have experience,” said Vali Nasr, a former State Department adviser who is now dean of the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, part of Johns Hopkins University. “If you rely on a country that doesn’t have those things, you are really flying blind. When you have an intermediary, you are going to lose control.”

He said that Qatar would not have gone through with the arms shipments if the United States had resisted them, but other current and former administration officials said Washington had little leverage at times over Qatari officials. “They march to their own drummer,” said a former senior State Department official. The White House and State Department declined to comment....................

.....nearly a dozen current and former White House, diplomatic, intelligence, military and foreign officials, would speak only on the condition of anonymity for this article..............

There is a lot more in this article, including Benghazi and Christopher Stevens.

Obama leading from behind and then "concerned" that he can't control what happens. Right.

That the NYT is finally writing about this, means the truth is circulating and the implications are too big to bury.

Meanwhile, Assad has filled Syrian bombs with lethal chemicals, while Hillary Clinton ponders over how many people will die before there is a successful political transition.

This quote is chilling to me.

“.........”Ultimately, what we should be thinking about is a political transition in Syria and one that should start as soon as possible,” Clinton said. “We believe their fall is inevitable. It is just a question of how many people have to die before that occurs.”......

The rebels are all jihadis. And in addition to getting these weapons, they probably have Libyan gas shells that they passed to the rebels in Syria. They will detonate them and blame Assad.
After all, Hillary the moron just told them, “if chemicals are used, we and NATO will intervene.” So now they know exactly what they need to do.

“how many people will die before there is a successful political transition.”

Transition to what? A Wahabbist moslem brotherhood nation like Egypt, that actually crucifies Christians, and makes Sharia official? I for one hope the rebels (Obamas friends) do not succeed.

And where did you hear that Assad had chemical bombs filled? Did that NBC news story quote a US Government official as saying that? An Official of a government that cannot wait for us to be involved in that civil war? That Offical said it? Why on earth would you trust them when they lie to us, almost constantly, and about everything.

That gas shell story is pure propaganda.

“The Syrian military is prepared to use chemical weapons against its own people and is awaiting final orders from President Bashar Assad, U.S. officials told NBC News on Wednesday.......

As recently as Tuesday, officials had said there was as yet no evidence that the process of mixing the “precursor” chemicals had begun. But Wednesday, they said their worst fears had been confirmed: The nerve agents were locked and loaded inside the bombs.....”

Bingo! Plus, a Syrian intervention will serve as a nice diversion from what Obama is doing to the US and get the drones to further support him as he tries to spend America into oblivion.

“The real story, or the heavily sanitized version of the real story, is slowly dribbling out of the mainstream media. And there are a few things to keep in mind while reading through this New York Times piece.

1. Qatar has ties to Al Qaeda, runs Al Jazeera and was responsible for much of the Arab Spring.

2. The Qatari goal was to build up a network of Islamist states.

3. Qatar has a major financial presence in Europe and is turning into the a new and even more dangerous Saudi Arabia.

This situation is slowly leaking into the mainstream media, either because Obama Inc. is breaking with Qatar or looking to shift responsibility for actions that they knew Qatar was undertaking...................

.........The technical term for this is plausible deniability. The State Department at this point had every reason to know what Qatar would do. The terrorist ties there were well documented....

......How do you say Chutzpah in Arabic again?

So we’ve got Obama giving his blessing to Qatari arms shipments to Libya, which not only go to Islamist militias in Libya, but which are then used by Islamist militias in Syria and Mali. This makes Arms for Hostages look petty.

And the cover up had begun very early. This wasn’t clean at all...........”

Yes , we have gone to war against Weapons of Mass Destruction before .

I would not be surprized that the rebels would detonate supplies of gas on their own populace .. and blame the Syrian nationals . Don’t forget that these are the same who use their own women to hide behind , place rockets in school yards and next to hospitals and playgrounds.
Our own government is no more honest than the rebels whom they have supplied , given “ Fast and Furious “ , Benghazi , etc.
I will await confirmation news from foreign sources.

Isn’t the headline intentionally misleading by the NYT? US approved? Really? Did the congress approve arming the rebels? I think not. This was Obama and his cohorts, not The United States of America.

Can anyone confirm or explain the extent of Russian military resources on - the - ground in Syria? Canada Free Press reportedly mentioned there are presently 100,000 Russian troops stationed there?

If so, a NATO and US response to WMDs will trigger ?

Benghazi is Obama’s international version of “Fast and Furious.” He and Hillary supplied guns to the “freedom fighters,” who of course, were Islamist jihadis and promptly used U.S. supplied weapons to kill the four Americans Obama betrayed there.

Of course, none of this could come out before the election, so the corrupt press sat on the story and is still covering it up. Someday, it will be published as “old news” that has no relevance to the newest “crisis” manufactured by the Left to keep the nation distracted as freedom perishes in the land.

It’s that simple.
