Sen. Jim DeMint to Head Heritage Foundation (leaving US Senate in January)
WSJ ^

Posted on 12/06/2012 7:31:44 AM PST by Perdogg

South Carolina U.S. Senator Jim DeMint will replace Ed Feulner as president of the Heritage Foundation. Mr. DeMint will leave his post as South Carolina's junior senator in early January to take control of the Washington think tank, which has an annual budget of about $80 million.

Sen. DeMint's departure means that South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, a Republican, will name a successor, who will have to run in a special election in 2014. In that year, both Mr. DeMint's replacement and Sen. Lindsey Graham will be running for reelection in South Carolina.

“How about Trey Gowdy?”

YES! He could more than make up for the loss of Demint.

Very sad to see him go, however, he must have a very strong candidate to take his place in mind, along with Governor Haley. I hope this move comes as a prep for a WH plan. We’ll have to see.

“He may be more effective at Heritage than he could be in the Senate. And it opens up a slot for a new young senator. How about Trey Gowdy?”

I doubt it. We have few real senators and this is a major loss. We need people like him PLUS new blood to replace RINOs not conservatives.

Exactly he say the handwriting on the wall. Probably preempting him from being purged like in the house anyway.

It’s terrible news to us not to have his representation in the Senate, but he’s probably seeing greater impact value of heading an organization like the Heritage Foundation than having to deal with the likes of Mitch McConnell and Harry Reid on a regular basis.

He will be sorely missed.

Wonder if he'll stay with the Senate Conservatives PAC. Hope so.

Any thoughts on Nikki Haley appointing herself?

If not how about Tim Scott.

I shall miss Jim, he was the spine of the Senate.

I’d say that Nikki Haley might appoint herself, but most South Carolinians probably think that at least one of the state’s senators should be a male.

We have no one to fight for us.....

I guess elections really are useless. We elect conservatives only to have the likes of Boehner pull them from any position of power. Now the remaining conservatives just leave.

See tagline.....

Why didn’t they take Grahamnesty instead? That would get him out of the Senate and they could fire him a week later. The severance would be worth every penny. We could even take up a collection.

This is terrible. Can’t say I blame him, as one man can only take so much, but this is terrible news.

Everybody seems to be forgetting.

“I can tell conservatives from my perspective is that, I’m not only comfortable with Romney, I’m excited about the possibility of him possibly being our nominee,” DeMint said. “Again, this is not a formal endorsement and I do not intend to do that right now but I just think we just need to look at where we are.”

You can't fix what is dysfunctional, broken, or against you.

You have to go around it, he is "reloading" like Sarah did when she quit.

We will need him @ Heritage for when the E-GOP implodes and we finally move out from the Divorce they gave us a long time ago and try to build a new Conservative Party.

Prepare to gird your loins Freepers...

“Does he feel that he can be more of a factor at Heritage, or is he just tired of battling in the Senate?”

I think the latter part of your reply says it all.

DeMint sees the writing on the wall. Harry Reid is going to do whatever he can to further marginalize the “Republican voice” in the Senate — his move to end the filibuster shows where things are going there.

The Senate isn’t going to be an enjoyable chamber in which to be a Republican for the next four years. Indeed, the struggle may last much -longer than- four years.

Are there any conservatives down there who would make a competent replacement?

I agree. Our swirling motion around the drain just sped up faster and moved us closer to the hole. Just when you think things politically couln’t get much worse.....it does.

Think he will be able to vote against Boehner for speaker before he leaves?
