There won't be too many more stories involving what the survivors are up to these days. I've always been a PH buff and will really miss hearing from them.

Remember Pearl Harbor.

I remember December 7,1941 quite well.

I was a child and all the adults were talking about war(we were at family Sunday dinner)and my cousin and I asked our parents if there would still be a Christmas.

I was born a year and a month after the Hiroshima bomb was dropped. But in those informative years watching TV, and hearing from so many that served in WWII, first hand, new when I presented a hand salute to our war memorials at ceremonies, having the honor of playing taps at like events while in scouting, I was doing it for a real purpose.
I'm with you. Korean War on the radio came to my ears on a more personal level.

“My FIL was at Pearl Harbor on the USS Helena.”

He was a lucky guy. I’ll bet he had some stories to tell.

My DIL’s folks were born in Honolulu and were about 12 years old when the bombs started falling.

I hope we never see anything like that again.

Every account I’ve read about Helena goes on about how efficient & effective she was. Was your FIL on her at Kula Gulf?

I stand corrected. And am quite familiar with the correct term to use. There are times some here will address a more broad audience. But no excuse on my part. I agree with your statement.

To you second post on that issue. I respect it. Also we present arms. To them all since those bloody and cold days in our revolution onward. Honor comes to mind. We don’t forget the sacrifices at so many levels.

His honor to his country is recognized. That mighty cruiser thought damaged, went on as some of us are aware to serve in the South Pacific, only later to be sunk. Was he among those that where able to be saved?

Thanks for going to the effort of locating that live recorded message, then presenting it here.

You are welcome. Many radio stations in Hawaii play that and other related recordings on the air at this time every year.

With Obama apparently weakening our defenses and strengthening our enemies, many prayers are needed in addition to right action at the polls in coming years!

Yes, after Pearl Harbor they limped to California, repaired and joined the war in the Pacific.

The sinking of the Helena was one of the few things he talked about. They put on their life jackets and tread water for hours and when the first survivors were being rescued their life jackets fell off and sank and they realized that they had been holding up their life jackets and not vice versa.

The heroic rescue of the crew of the sunken Helena is one of the great stories of WWII.

I’m glad to hear your FIL survived those ordeals. In my heart of hearts like so many of us, for the million plus that never made it home. I stand at attention and give them their due honor. One of total respect for serving their country in battle.

Being “buried . . . in a volcanic crater” conveys a sense of crass insensitivity. But is it not the case that an extinct volcanic crater in Hawaii is the site of a well-tended, duly honored and respected U. S. military cemetery?
Is this the crater named The Punchbowl?

I agree: the AP writer should know better. Indeed, the reference is to the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific located at Punchbowl in Honolulu.
