The US is trying to prevent Russia from recreating a new version of the Soviet Union under the ruse of economic integration, Hillary Clinton warned on Thursday.
“There is a move to re-Sovietise the region,” the US secretary of state told a news conference in Dublin hours before going into a meeting with her Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov.
“It’s not going to be called that. It’s going to be called a customs union, it will be called Eurasian Union and all of that,” she said, referring to various iterations of a Moscow-backed plan to deepen economic ties with its neighbours.
“But let's make no mistake about it. We know what the goal is and we are trying to figure out effective ways to slow down or prevent it.”
Mrs Clinton said efforts at regional hegemony had been accompanied by new campaigns of repression from pro-Moscow regimes throughout the former Soviet Union. Her tone signalled that the US was rethinking its “reset” in relations with Russia, declared in 2009, during which criticism of its human rights record has been muted and Moscow appeared to have a freer hand in the former Soviet region...

Russia doesn’t have the wherewithal to restart the cold war. Russia would like to further ensnare Ukraine which is the second largest country in Europe. All we need to do is encourage the building of an LNG terminal. Once we start exporting natural gas to Ukraine we’ve given Russia an economic kick to the balls. Russia won’t be able to use natural gas as leverage against Europe not to mention they’ll see diminshed income.
You can’t create a Caliphate and the Soviet Union at the same time. It’s about priorities.
I guess Hillary is a little nervous. If America were to have a foreign enemy, people might start voting Republican again (over matters of national defense). With no foreign enemies, a majority will vote for the Democrats to give them free stuff.
I hate to say it, but the demise of the Soviet Union also brought about the demise of the Republican Party...

Two issues have strained relations with Russia.
1. Gas prices between Gazprom (R) and Naftogaz (U). The Russians use this like a hammer on Ukraine.
2. The port leases in Sevastopol and Odessa for the Black Sea Fleet. Russia has been double dealing on the lease.
Ukrainians are not Russian and do not want to re-affiliate. Also still too many bad memories of Stalin's "Holodomor" which left 10 million Ukrainians dead.

It may have something to do with Russia supporting Syria while we’re providing support to the insurgents flooding into Syria. There’s supposed to be a sit down with Russia over Syria. My guess is Hilary and Obama will not interfere with Russia in Europe if Russia dumps Assad. That means no export licenses for LNG going to Europe.
Russia will still have their hooks into Europe and Obama buys another country for the Muslim Brotherhood. If RT shuts up about our interference in Syria, you’ll know it was a done deal. It looks like the Ukrainian government was recently scammed with a phony deal to build an LNG terminal. Some think the Russians were behind that.

I just read a commentary in a European paper warning that the world is seeing the return of Communism (in a new ‘enlightened’ form, of course), and Russia wasn’t even mentioned.
