Michigan Republicans draw union ire with sudden votes on right-to-work legislation

Michigan Republicans touched off a firestorm Thursday with an abrupt push to pass right-to-work legislation, in what would be a blow to organized labor in the home of the U.S. auto industry.

Right-to-work legislation prohibits unions from forcing workers to pay union dues. Unions and their Democratic allies adamantly oppose these laws -- but with little warning, Michigan Republicans on Thursday laid the groundwork to, in a matter of days, make their state the 24th with right-to-work legislation.

"This is all about taking care of the hard-working workers in Michigan, being pro-worker and giving them freedom to make choices," Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder said. "The goal isn't to divide Michigan, it is to bring Michigan together."

The votes Thursday, though, drew hundreds of union-tied protesters to the capital, some of whom were pepper-sprayed by police when they tried to storm the Senate chamber.

Just hours after the bills were introduced, both Republican-controlled chambers approved measures prohibiting private unions from requiring dues. The Senate quickly followed by voting to impose the same requirement on most public unions.

I wonder how long before the unions become “racists”? Let me explain. Obama is going to open the flood gates to millions of illegals who will now be able to compete for those jobs they previously could not. Will all you progressives now be against opening the border?

Yes, this would have happened to some extent without RTW but now unions are cannot prohibit applicants out.

Imagine having to be along side someone who is not paying their fair share in dues and still is enjoying all the same benefits.

It would be like taxes - someone paying more and a greater share of their income while someone else not paying as much or at all enjoying the benefits.

Progressives have a funny religion.

If one does not want to work in an open shop, then find another job in a closed one.

Forcing someone to pay to work. Isn’t that what Kwame Kilpatrick was doing?

My cousin is an up and coming union leader. He was posting pics of himself in his cute little yellow vest in Lansing yesterday. He’s in complete denial. He believes Obama is coming to Michigan to seize control and issue a Royal decree. I just tell him that Obama doesn’t need him anymore.

What is stop the savior king from an executive order declaring all companies doing business with his government must be union shops? The worker does not have to join the union but that does not mean the worker has to be employed?

You list the elected city officials of Detroit. Granted, they are the last in a long chain of Left-leaning 'Rats responsible for Detroit's 50+ years of decline, ending in urban rot and fiscal insolvency.

I suppose that nothing short of some form of bankruptcy can improve Detroit's city government, so how does the dire Detroit financial outlook relate the state right-to-work legislation which is the subject of this thread?

I think it’s done and needs to be plowed over cause they run the place and have, for over 20 years like an African nation. A total failure. But at the risk of sounding racist which I am not, in the 5,000 years of human history, you cannot pinpoint a country run by blacks anyone would ever want to live.

Well put. Snyder’s bound to be governing from the middle, because the electorate is profoundly divided.

Too bad Zero doesn’t act that way as President.

The sad part is that Bing and Janice Winfrey are major improvement from their predecessors.
