Why John Boehner Must Not Fold on Tax Rate Increases
Red State ^

Posted on 12/07/2012 8:03:12 AM PST by Windy City Conservative

Barack Obama needs the Republicans to raise rates. If they do not get it before January 1, all of the Bush tax cuts will expire and the GOP will not permit any reduction without it being an across the board reduction. Moderate Democrats in the Senate and the few remaining blue dogs in the House will be in a very difficult position.

There is still no evidence that Barack Obama’s 2008 or 2012 coalition is the Democrats’ coalition. It did not turn out to save Democrats in 2010. There is no guarantee it will turn out to save them in 2014. But what the moderate Democrats do know is that both Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi were perfectly willing to throw them under the bus in 2010. Only Harry Reid tried to save his moderate Democrats. That puts Barack Obama in a very tight spot after January 1st.

We must make sure Boehner does not buckle this year. It gets easier after the New Year.

This makes perfect sense. I heard that Boehner insisted that he meet with Obama one on one. I fear that he will agree to raise rates. If he does and they pass, Republicans are probably finished as a party and this nation is going to be in a world of hurt.

Boehner needs to grow a pair, quickly. And I am not referring to a par of tear ducts.

My idea for what it’s worth. Let the cliff happen. Then send Obama legislation to restore the middle class tax cuts and the defense budget. Allow the other cliff budget cuts to happen, and own the middle class tax cuts. Force Obama to ask for higher domestic spending. Take away his ownership of any tax cuts.

???? Where is the author getting this? Just making it up.
Bohner and CO have already decided to cut the <=$250K ones and send it to Reid this year. Any House R voting against tax cuts for the middle class will be putting a gun to their heads.

They know Rs would get all the blame for the tax increases as they aways do , and for the economy too.
Thats why they would never hold firm if that happens again. It would be crazy.

O’s not going to sign the other extensions, he has no need too. He has a political win-win on tax cuts for the middle class by themselves.

Heck, send the Senate two bills on those extensions, <250 and >250K and problem solved without the drama/

Sequestration is like killing the Greek crocodile now. Get it over with. Declare the “sequestered” budgets the new baseline for all future budgets. No tax increases. Obama and his acolytes will squirm, scream and rant. Boehner should put a piece of blank paper in front of him and ask him to name all House Speakers since 1980. Then ask him to name all the presidents since 1980 and ask him who he thinks needs to worry more about a “legacy”.

Regardless of what John Boehner and the Current Occupant of the White Hut may agree to behind closed doors or out in public, there is actually only one way this will be played - the 2011 debt limit increase agreement, which called for sequestration of federal spending, along with restoration of the level of tax rates that had been inherited from the Clintonian years, plus restoration of the full payment into FICA by the employee, stands as the controlling legal authority. All these provisions essentially solve the problem for Obama in so many ways. An APPARENT increase in revenue to the US Treasury supposedly because of higher tax rates, plus a decrease in the outlays from the Treasury (especially for the military), coupled with the very real probability that the entire blame can (and will) be shifted to the Republicans, as “obstructionists”, all add up to a win-win-win for Obama.

OK, give him his win. But it ought to be, must be, and possibly could be (if the Republicans do not waver), the last win he shall have. No offer for any future tax rate reductions for anybody, no agreement to any new spending programs, and if the Republicans are going to be blamed for this “obstructionist” behavior anyway, better to be for actually actively BEING obstructionist.

The taxes go up automatically so they dont need Republican votes for that.

Republicans needs to quit talking about themselves raising taxes, starting with this author.

Bohners just playing to the MSM (looking for sympathy) , there is no chance that O will give in so there will be no deal this year. Next year, watch out.

Boner will fold. There is absolutely no doubt about it. The real question is whether the rest of the Republicans will allow him to get away with it once more.

Last time Boner gave Obama everything he wanted. He boasted about reducing the deficit even while he allowed useless spending continued to grow.

The GOP needs to give Boner the boot. But it doesn’t look as if the conservatives in congress, mostly more recent members, have to power to do it. And it’s hard for the base to put pressure on these guys, who don’t seem to care if they win or lose as long as they keep their power, perks, and pork.

Still, we need to do SOMETHING! Getting Boner out of there is a top priority.

"Republicans are probably finished as a party and this nation is going to be in a world of hurt. "

Because of a pocket change tax increase for the top 2%? Sorry, if the Republicans don't start to pay attention to the family working class, they will be finished as a party and good riddance. We need a conservative third party for the middle class.

The taxes will only go up, because Obama refused to extend the Bush Tax Cuts, not because the GOP agreed to raise rates. The only person to blame for the Bush Tax Cut expiration is Obama.

Well I am sure preaching to the choir here will make that happen. After all look how well that worked with the election of Romney.

Did you see how well that played with FICA fight a year ago?

You see any polls on who voters will blame lately?? hint, its the same as the FICA fight.

It would be a GOP death wish to vote against those middle class tax cuts.
