If you get one nice thing a year, especially if you got it back in the days when gold was much cheaper, then $100,000 (current value) is not that hard to acquire.

Exactly! There was a time when gold jewelry, and even US Mint Proof coins were on sale, the coins for a fraction of their issue value (in a local store).

That was the year I bought gold for all the adult female relatives (and especially Mrs. Joe) for Christmas. Gold was at roughly $300 then, and the jewelry has appreciated significantly in value.
