Lincoln County residents can now apply for and purchase gun permits through the Sheriff’s Office website.

The agency recently made the switch to online applications to “provide better customer service” and “streamline the permit process,” ultimately cutting back on the public’s flow of traffic in and out of the Sheriff’s Office and increasing the system’s level of convenience for residents, according to a press release.

Prior to moving the permit process online, citizens had to make multiple trips to the Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff David Carpenter told the Times-News on Thursday.

I believe this is in response to a legislative attempt to do away with the racialy inspired, antiquated, and counterproductive requirement to obtain permission from the Sheriff's office before purchasing a handgun.

This nasty law, dating from the "black code" era, is dangerous and should be repealed.

I didn’t realize there were any NC gun registration type laws; only the gun dealers requirement to do a back ground.

And be aware if you go to North Carolina. As I understand the concealed carry law in North Carolina as I read it last night, you cannot carry a handgun in a vehicle unless you have a concealed weapons permit. It doesn’t matter if it’s loaded or unloaded, in the the glove box or the trunk in a locked case. North Carolina does however recognize concealed weapons permits from many other states including my state of Florida. This of course has nothing to do with the stupid permission permit you have go get/buy in order to purchase a handgun.

You have to buy a permit to buy (which is where the cops do the background check) before you can buy a handgun from a dealer; unless you have a CC permit, which counts as a permit to buy for the duration of the CC permit. Long guns....just fill out the 4473, while he’s phoning in the background check, pay him, and go out the door.

You don’t need a permit to buy a gun in NC.

I stand corrected. Civil War laws are still in place here regarding pistols. Good thing I didn’t waste my time going to Academy to get my 2 new presents for me.

I’ll just go to Knoxville and get them.

Thanks for the clarification. Can you openly carry a handgun on the street in NC?

Would be nice to have a ‘go-to site’ that keeps ‘up-to-date’ all regulations and pertinent information for all states.

I like this system, compared to the previous one. I ordered 4 new purchase permits online, and they were approved in less than a week. I still have to go to Marshville to pick them up, though, with my ID to prove I’m me.

In NC, there isn’t gun registration per se. You have to get a permit from your local county sheriff in order to “obtain” a handgun, whether by purchase or gift or estate. Once you get the permit, you can get one, and only one, handgun—want another gun, you have to get another permit. You do not have to register the handgun...EXCEPT in Durham County (where I used to live), which is the only county in the state allowed by state law to require handgun registration. In theory, once you “use” the purchase permit, it’s not retained by the sheriff’s office, and no further information (serial number, etc.) is retained. There’s no permit or extra process required for buying a long gun over and above what you have to do to satisfy the Feds, the permitting is only for handguns.

The irony is that these laws were put into place to keep black people disarmed. Durham has always been a heavily black city and I expect that the registration requirement there was loopholed into state law just because of that. But now, who are the ones most vehemently defending the restriction on gun ownership? Black politicians...disarming their black constituents who need defending more than anyone else because of the crapholes many of them live in, such as Durham.

There’s also apparently a very wide variance in the ease of getting permits. Lincoln County is making it easy by going online. Back in Durham, you have to go downtown, fill out forms, pay a fee, and then they can take up to 30 days. And yes, you CAN be denied.
