Delegates at UN climate talks in Qatar have agreed to extend the Kyoto Protocol until 2020, avoiding a major new setback.

The deal, agreed by nearly 200 nations, keeps the protocol alive as the only legally binding plan for combating global warming.

However, it only covers developed nations whose share of world greenhouse gas emissions is less than 15%.

The US - a major polluter - has never ratified the original 1997 protocol.

The agreement had been due to expire later this year.

Weak plan to save Kyoto pushes climate talks to brink
http://news.yahoo.com/weak-plan-save-kyoto-pushes-climate-talks-brink-122824045.html

DOHA (Reuters) - Weak proposals to extend until 2020 a shrivelled U.N. plan to fight climate change pushed marathon talks to the brink of collapse on Saturday.

Delegates from nearly 200 nations spent hours poring over a package deal put forward by the host, OPEC member Qatar, that would also postpone until 2013 a row over demands from developing nations for more cash to help them cope with global warming.

Developing nations were divided over the modest deal that all sides said fell short of recommendations by scientists for tougher action to try to avert more heatwaves, sandstorms, floods, droughts and rising sea levels.

“They face two unpalatable options - accept a weak text or risk the collapse of the entire talks,” said Alden Meyer of the Union of Concerned Scientists.

The draft deal would extend the Kyoto Protocol for eight years. It had obliged about 35 industrialised nations to cut greenhouse gas emissions by an average of at least 5.2 percent below 1990 levels during the period from 2008 to 2012.

Kyoto will expire at the end of 2012 if it is not extended and has been weakened by the withdrawals of Russia, Japan and Canada. The United States never ratified it, and its backers, led by the European Union and Australia, account for just 15 percent of world greenhouse gas emissions.

Alternate name for the talks:

“How to destroy civilization so that the sea doesn’t rise 0.0000007582 cm over the next 100 years.”

“The only thing that can save us now is to give the government more money!”

I wonder if they will invoke the help of a false Mayan deity again?

I want everyone to send me $10,000.00 by next week. OK, if you don’t send the money I am going to extend the timeline until next year. That about sums of the MORONIC LEFTS formula for the Climate Talks. I have a better idea. Why don’t the SOCIALIST LEFTISTS anti up to these poor countries and put their MONEY WHERE THEIR MOUTHS ARE.

Funny how they say this:
The US - a major polluter - has never ratified the original 1997 protocol.

But don't bother to tell you that the US has reduced CO2 emissions more than any other nation in the world since Kyoto started.

Real journalism is dead. All is now propaganda.
