A plan now before Congress would create a national park spread over three states to protect the aging remnants of the atomic bomb project from World War II, including an isolated cabin where grim findings threw the secretive effort into a panic.

My father was stationed at White Sands and saw Trinity. He was about to go up with a flight (he was an instructor) when they were given a message to stand down. He said that it was like the sun had come up in an instant - he could see every rivet of his plane. My mother heard the blast 20 miles away. Of course, they told everyone that an amunition dump had exploded.

“...where grim findings threw the secretive effort into a panic.”

Heh. I thought they found some dead bodies in the cabin that would keep it from being a park or something!

Pretty cool that some of their stuff was going on in log cabins. The contrast in technology is pretty neat - 1800’s architecture welcomes in the Atomic Age.

I don’t like the feds buying up land to make national parks but I would love to go visit some of the bomb sites and craters.

They could do a lot to restore/recreate the atomic pile in the squash court at Stagg Field, site of the first controlled nuclear reaction, and Argonne National Laboratory, where subsequent experiments were conducted, to get them away from urban areas for safety reasons.

Historians and federal agencies reply that preservation does not imply moral endorsement, and that the remains of so monumental a project should be saved as a way to encourage comprehension and public discussion.

Has anyone watched Oliver Stone's questioning of the morality of what took place when the U. S. dropped the bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki? The guy really humps it for all it's worth.

There's no doubt in my mind where this is headed, and if it stops short of war crimes charges being brought, I'll be surprised.

We just doubled the tax the state has to pay to local governments for land in Michigan. Now we need to do the same with the feds.

But critics have faulted the plan as celebrating a weapon of mass destruction, and have argued that the government should avoid that kind of advocacy.

Ah. Thank God for the Atom Bomb

Obviously the federal government needs MORE land, I mean they don't have jack squat for land in the western states anyways...

So yeah they NEED MORE LAND!

They already own most of the sites already, some of which are part of existing weapons design and production facilities.

Gentlemen! You can’t fight in here! This is the war room!

This is yet another result of liberalism in education. None of these idiots does anything but think in the emotional moment. When libs think of war, they don’t think of it in terms of winning. When they think of history, they don’t think of it in terms of preservation or accuracy.

They think of both as means of manipulation.

If you preserve the atomic legacy, you preserve the memory of America’s old school attitude where winning was for a reason OTHER than a talking point. It reminds people that once, we were the good guys that fought against the very same mindset that the libs enspouse. And fought with nuclear weapons...such was our determination to expunge totalitarianism from our midst.

To preserve the atomic legacy is to preserve the very idea that their plans for world domination (and all the details that lead to it) could quite literally be gone in a flash. And that once, Americans would do so with not an Iota of remorse.

:-) Argonne National Laboratory is a cool place, they have public tours you can go on (or used to before 9-11-01).

I live pretty dang close to Argonne, it's still in use today. New research is always ongoing there as is new building construction and upgrades. And even though it is a fair sized place (Google-Bing Maps Earth View) it's surrounded by suburbs -- with a public Forest Preserve right on the South border ('Waterfall Glen'). And needless to say Argonne is a pretty secure place.

note I said , 'pretty secure'. And that's all I can say about that.
(Hi NSAFBIDOJCIADOE.gov. [btw, do you guys wear your dark sun glasses on cloudy days too?])

Norm, I agree with your take. I will say though that you can preserve the tools of the atomic legacy for a good or evil purpose.

It’s my take that the evil purpose is what is driving this.

To de-legitimize the moral fiber of the United States, is the goal. The U. N. drives this. The Left in the United States drives it.

In this nation today, it’s safe to say that every effort must be questioned. Who is really driving the effort? What is the true motive?
