How very carefully they do not say that the death was justified or that the resident defended himself and his family. Perhaps the resident is simply asserting his rights. I believe that people in Canada have the right to remain silent, as do people in the United States.

“22-year-old Ibrahim Abukar”
(A great loss to Canada and to all of humanity, I’m sure.)

“Ibrahim Abukar” so, does he or does he not qualify for his 72 virgins?

During his off times from studying at York's Schulich School of Business, friends said Abukar coached youth through the Somali Youth Basketball League, where he spent most of his Saturdays. He would give advice to kids to go to post-secondary school. A real model for the Somali community, said Karim. He was warm. Not anymore.

Mississauga is a nice city. My son lived there for about three years.

Sounds like it’s turning into New Fallujah (Detroit).

Police believe the man shot dead during a home invasion in Mississauga early Friday morning was an intruder.I just love statements like this. How much on a limb are police willing to go? They admit it was a home invasion, but they only "believe" that the man shot dead was an intruder. "You know, maybe he was the home owner, maybe he was an intruder, but we believe he was an intruder. We haven't checked the ID yet of the survivor to see if he lived there or not, yet. Things take time, and we don't want to be rash in our judgements until the facts are in."

There are other possibilities. He could have been a hostage, forced into service to gain entry. He might have connections to the homeowner that will be revealed during the investigation.
I admit that those things are unlikely, but they exist, and the police must be very careful about making definitive statements.

... friends said Abukar coached youth through the Somali Youth Basketball League ... And apparently engaged in burglary and armed robbery as well. Apparently the Somali "work" ethic sees nothing wrong with just taking what you want from others. A reprise of castle bravo in Mogadishu would solve a lot of problems.

Shotguns aren’t too difficult to own even in Canuckistan.
Glad it was a muzzie, doubly glad it was a Somali.

In that case, they are being rash in making the definitive statement that there was a home invasion.

Unless I'm badly misunderstanding Canadian gun laws (and other laws) the homeowner just might be prosecuted for one or more crimes

Maybe, but the Criminal Code section on self-defence was recently amended so they might not charge him.

Maybe, but the Criminal Code section on self-defence was recently amended so they might not charge him. I think that here in the US laws regarding incidents like this vary from state to state. Some states,IIRC,have the "castle doctrine" written into their laws which gives a homeowner various rights in repelling a home invader.Other states (mine included) require a homeowner to flee such a situation rather than stand his/her ground.I assume that the more "progressive" a state is the more likely you're required to flee.
Interesting to see that Canada recognizes the rights of home dwellers even when at least *parts* of the US don't.
