NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -A man with a record of 39 arrests was shot and killed by police detectives in Queens overnight, after pulling what police thought was a gun, but turned out to be a compressed air pistol.
Police on Sunday afternoon continued to investigate the shooting that left the 42-year-old man dead. The suspect killed by police had not been identified as of 3 p.m., pending family notification.
Around 10:45 p.m. Saturday at Gates and Seneca avenues in the Ridgewood section of Queens, two male plainclothes NYPD detectives – ages 48 and 42 and both nine-year department veterans – had just had arrested a 33-year-old suspect in a buy-and-bust drug sting operation.
At that point, they were confronted by the suspect, who pulled what looked like a Glock 19 semi-automatic handgun, police said. It was actually a Walther CP99 compressed air pistol, but was designed to look like a Glock, police said.
The drug dealer who was arrested initially said the suspect with the air pistol “appeared out of nowhere,” and watched as the man pulled the weapon at detectives.
When he did so, the dealer said he told the man with the gun, “They’re cops, you idiot!”

What's your point? Even the wary, like LEOs, are shot and killed.
I think better than excellent night vision helps, plus wear clothing that allows you to blend into your surroundings ~ and don't go bothering people with firearms ~ always makes it easier to avoid trouble in the wee hours.
Just as a guideline, never enter or leave a front door of a business establishment or a government building. That just frames you for problems.
If someone points a gun at you, will you act or cower ? Do you carry auto, homeowners, health and personal liability insurance?
It is a chance the cop could not take.
That fake Glock air pistol (probably) helped him pull all kinds of sheeeeet out on the street. But his good luck streak ran out with some cops
What's your point? Criminals are not in uniforms or marked cars.
Pointing a BB gun at police officers as they are making an arrest should qualify the dead guy to at least an honorable mention at the Darwin awards ceremony
The NYC Journalistas are still arguing this one. Some say it was a Ruger designed to look like a Taurus. Others a Colt designed to look like an AK-47. But those in the know say it was definitely just a Beretta designed to look like a Mossberg.
Seriously, when a drug dealer tells you to not act stupidly around cops, that is pretty good advice.

“Looked like a gun?” An air pistol is a gun! Pull a gun on a police officer - you get shot - end of story.
I have one that's a Daisy designed to look like a Webley.
They would never get that.
My wife has a Crosman designed to look like a Smith and Wesson. It looks like a Smith and Wesson. At the gun store, my boy saw one in the display case and said they have a BB pistol like ma's. I said nope, that's the real thing.

Or it did appear out of nowhere after the police gunned him down. Besides, it’s NYC and no one is allowed to have a weapon of any kind, or a 32 oz sugary drink for that matter.
Looks like a Glock? The CP99 is—and is supposed to be—a dead ringer for the Walther P99C.
And(?) And those pellet guns can kill you just as dead as a firearm, i.e pistol. For the MSM to come out and say he only had a pellet gun is just stupid on their part meaning that the cops shouldn’t have shot him because he “only” had a pellet gun.
