Capitalism is, by its nature, dynamic. George Osborne's attempt to engineer the 'perfect society undermines the logic of the free market
When the Edward Gibbon of the 22nd century comes to write his History of the Decline and Fall of the West, who will feature in his monumental study of the collapse of the most successful economic experiment in human history? In this saga of the mass suicide of the richest nations on earth, there may be particular reference to those national leaders who chose to deny the reality that was, from the vantage point of our future chronicler, so obviously looming. Or maybe the leadership of our day in Washington, London and Brussels will appear to have been swept helplessly along by irresistible forces that originated before their time.
But for us, right here, right now, it matters that Barack Obama and George Osborne are playing small-time strategic games with their toy-town enemies while the unutterable economic truth stares them in the face. (The political leadership of the EU seems to have passed through the looking glass into a world where the rules of economics do not apply, so their statements and actions are beyond analysis.) Mr Obama is locked in an eye-balling contest with a Republican Congress to see who can end up with more ignominy when the United States goes over the fiscal cliff. It is clear now that the president will be quite happy to bring about this apocalypse which would pull most of the developed world into interminable recession if he could be sure that it would result in long-term electoral damage to his opponents.

Let’s just raise EVERYBODY’s taxes to pay for Government spending and balance the budget. If we really did that, Government spending would come down quite quickly.
Yes, everyone needs to contribute something - the 40% getting a free ride need to have to pay something. Then we’ll hear them screaming like stuck pigs.
The only results that are guaranteed if taxes go up is that spending will go up even higher and that there will be no cuts in welfare programs.
And then there seems to be an underlying assumption that the world, and all of recorded history, revolves around America.
The Roman empire, The Zhou (Chou) Chinese Dynasty to not even mention the three kingdoms of Egyptian history lasted much longer than the United States of America will.
History began long before and will continue for many many millennia after the Constitution is as ancient and perplexing as the Rosetta Stone.
lets not forget letting people in with no education and form third world countries will make the west into a third world nation.
No need to have wars to invade a country anymore.
A country can send it;s poor, criminals, etc who couldn;t careless about that country and her traditions ,laws etc to a country in the west and over time the natives of that country become a minority and thus another third world country.
Yeah, well, at least the dirt will still be here.
It has been such a price ledge to see what could have been...
It is not that they just have to pay something...
They also have to stop taking everything...
The truth is simple enough to speak to the Takers: "Your wants are not worth the intentional destruction of our country."
No, it will just be another Malthusian collapse.
All were willing to kill their enemies - we elect ours to high offices.
This lady has nailed it.
I do not think it’s over yet. But, we must do something about the parasite class. The current model cannot be sustained.
Awesome article so far!
F.A. Hayek (”The Road to Serfdom”) said that the Socialists who appeared in Europe in the aftermath of the French revolution never doubted that their values had nothing in common with those of liberal (meaning Libertarian) democrats. Even then, the European Socialists knew that socialism could only be put into practice by means of a dictatorship.
The early European liberal democrats used the term “freedom” just as we do. Political freedom was understood to mean freedom from government coercion, or freedom from arbitrary rule. But Socialists twisted the term “freedom” to mean “freedom from want”, freedom from hunger, etc. This, in effect, equated freedom with the use of coercive government power.
It is common to hear American leftist politicians equate freedom with the use of government power. Obama openly declares that the U S Constitution is outmoded because it restricts “what he can do for” the American people (There went any pretense of his having any respect for the rule of law). Hayek quoted John Dewey as saying “the demand for liberty is the demand for power”.
"Having won the Cold War and succeeded in settling the great ideological argument of the 20th century in favour of free-market economics, the nations of the West managed to bankrupt themselves by insisting that they could fund a lukewarm form of socialism with the proceeds of capitalism."
It is clear now that the president will be quite happy to bring about this apocalypse which would pull most of the developed world into interminable recession if he could be sure that it would result in long-term electoral damage to his opponents.
... and long-term damage to the United States of America.
Even foreigners will wish that Barack Obama had failed.
