It wouldn’t surprise me if it was in PA too. We like to cling to our guns as much as our religion in Pennsylvania.
I personally think this is a really good idea. The kids I’ve seen that are in organized programs (’air rifle’ shooting, skeet/sporting clays, etc.) that teach and promote safety seem to do very well & take the subject seriously. We grew up in a house with lots of guns since dad was an avid hunter and learned safety from him .... my brother passed it on to his girls, but they also took the hunter safety class when they started gun hunting (they’d been climbing in a bow stand with their dad to observe since they were about 8!). The girls (11 & 12 at the time) were really proud that they had passed their tests & having an ‘official’ instructor made an impression. Instead of trying to keep guns away from citizens who have every right to have gun(s), being proactive in teaching kids safety is a much better solution - I’m sure it will make a difference with these kids.
My dad taught me how to shoot when I was about 8 or 9 in Missippi. I target practiced with a pellet gun first and graduated to a 22 rifle and got to be an excellent shot. I got a 610 for Christmas but I always liked my 22 rifle.
Kids aren’t stupid. You can either kid-proof your guns or gun-proof your kids.
I always found the later worked for us. How you teach firearms safety basically depends on the demeanor, maturity, and personality of each kid. Both of mine were taught at an early age that it’s not like what they were seeing on TV. After they became familiar with basic firearms safety, they got the opportunity to put a few rounds out of a .357 mag into some pumpkins. They quickly came to respect firearms and eventually they became avid shooters themselves.
I was taught by a Marine BAR rifleman how to shoot a .22 when I was five. I’ve tried to pass those techniques and skills on to my own kids. None of us have ever robbed, killed or shot up our schools or friends. Instilling proper values and respect is what makes the difference.
Somehow, in our "gun culture", firearms are not even allowed on that campus... and I'm not that old.
I am sick of the left perverting the language to demonize anyone they percieve of as a impediment to their totalitarian agenda.
How can you own a gun and be that stupid? My father taught me when I was 6-7. How could you even point the muzzle of an unloaded gun at your own son?
America has lost it's collective mind. I'm 61 and just to think about what has changed in our culture knocks me to my knees. The America I knew is dead or dying. I watched the Fox special last night about going to the moon and felt like I was punched in the stomach. It was a time when we could do anything and now we voted for a moron twice for president. We can't even raise a child properly anymore.
Everyone knows America is finished, we just haven't stopped breathing yet. That we should still be arguing over gun knowledge for children, abortion, and sodomy just flabbergasts me.
Most, but not all of the kids were supplied by the local scout troops. You needed at least Bear rank in the Cubs to join. Girls were welcome as well and, as I recall, there were a handful of them.
The Elks men who conducted the workshop were no nonsense father figure types. They warned us from the get-go that any horsing around like pointing guns at people and you were out of the course.
By week two, we were actually allowed to handle BB guns. By week three or so, we were allowed to shoot at paper targets. The final week was week #6. We were allowed to handle and shoot pellet guns. They showed us .22's and we were allowed to come up to the table under their supervision and load and unload them. But no shooting. We were told that a much bigger outdoor range was required more than the basement range with sandbags and paper targets which the Elk's Club could provide. Those that passed the safety test (almost all of us) got a nice certificate and a handshake from the Elk's men on the way out. They told us to see our father's about shooting a .22.
In those days, most of the kids had fathers.
That is a Sheriff the county need to elect and RE-elect!
He should also open a public gun range with a low membership fee...
An armed and trained society is a polite AND safe society.
I recently re-read "Atlas Shrugged", having "read" it as a Senior in High School.
I came away with a completely different understanding of it. I think that Ayn Rand was more right that any of us would like to admit.
As Rand did, I see America shrinking away to isolated pockets of - for lack of a better word - "sanity". Rand attributed it to an abundance of local resources providing for these pockets, I'd attribute it to like-minded people coalescing together and figuring out how to get by. The government might seek to destroy or tax out of existence these pockets. They might comply, or not...the primary means of enforcing compliance now is to threaten to withhold federal funding....so a Fed without funds is toothless. At any rate, these small pockets will likely get by just fine on their own for awhile, with minimal gov't interference.
The rest of the country? Well, Bread and Circuses will keep the masses occupied. The Chattering Class will wring their hands over whatever the current outrage is (right now it's the 'fiscal cliff') and argue over trivialities. Much like the book, people will immerse themselves in absolute worthlessness, until the top blows off.
I also think Rand is right about the mass chaos *when* a tipping point is reached. IMO, it will be government defaulting on welfare payments that strikes match to tinder there. And riots on that scale are something that I'm not sure America as a country can survive, even the "small pockets".
So, much as Rand did, I see America kind of quietly fading away, with one great big BANG at the end. I'd imagine that it will take generations to burn through our wealth, though....one FReeper far brighter than I pointed out that it took Communism in Russia 70 years to collapse in upon itself, and they started with far fewer resources than we have.
The only question that remains, and it can only be answered by the historians, is "When did America's collase start"...I think that you and I would both agree that it's started already. I'll never see the end, and for that I'm thankful. I'm only sad that my kids / grandkids will never know what it was like to have things really good.

Great idea. I well remember during the ‘60’s taking “hunter safety” classes in the school cafeteria. They came complete with guns and ammo, and the care and feeding of both, among other things.
Kinda looks like what Boy Scouts does every single day. I’ve taught a couple hundred kids what to do if they find a gun as part of NRA’s Eddie Eagle Program and I’ve also taughtl lots of Cub Scout the basics of gun safety and how to safely handle a firearm.
Great job Sheriff. Teach safety instead of ignorance.
