Mideast: The chemical weapons that Syria is preparing to use may have come from a stockpile that Iraq used against its own people and which the Russians helped transport to Syria before Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Syria's chemical weapons are on the move, their precursor chemicals having been mixed, a crossing of a line drawn by President Obama Aug. 20 when he said "a red line for us is we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized." So our resolute president decides to draw another line that if Syria's Bashar al-Assad makes use of those weapons, presumably against his own people or neighbors, he will face "consequences."
Assad must be shaking in his boots, having dispatched 40,000 of his own people by more conventional means without any consequences from the United States. What's another 10,000, Assad must be thinking, even if they go in a quicker and more ghastly way?
Obama's appeasement has come home to roost. Assad remembers how Clinton, appearing on CBS' "Face The Nation," dismissed the idea of U.S. military action or regime change in Syria, claiming that unlike Libya's Moammar Gadhafi, Assad was considered to be a "reformer" by "many of the members of Congress."
He remembers how the Obama administration inexplicably made a recess appointment of Robert Ford to be ambassador to Damascus after President George W. Bush withdrew our ambassador in 2005. That was in response to the bombing that killed former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in which Syrian involvement was widely suspected.
Will Assad use chemical weapons as Saddam Hussein used nerve gas in 1988 to attack Kurds in the northern Iraqi town of Halabja, killing 5,000 men, women and children? Assad has shown no great regard for human life.

but of course NOT ONE of our Rep politicians is shouting this from the rooftop. They are such nerds, the goody too-shoes from high school, they just can’t play by street rules or even close.
THAT’S why we keep losing the votes..they just can’t get the message across to the average voter.
I remember in the run up to the Iraq War in 2002/2003, it was reported that Sadam was possibly moving chemical weapons into Syria.
That Syria has chemical weapons does nothing to prove Iraq had chemical weapons in 2003.
Hence the absence of rooftop-shouting.
Obama cannot “move” anything but an uninformed electorate, and he does that very well.
People have been talking about where Syria's chemical weapons come from since 1973 - they're from Egypt, Libya, the Soviet Union, and indigenous production plants that have been able to buy precursor chemicals from Europe by hook or by crook.
Hang on, that's impossible. We were ASSURED that Saddam didn't have weapons of mass destruction when Bush went in to take him down.
The press and the Democrats wouldn't lie about such a thing, would they?
I’ve been in multiple classes taught by people who were VERY highly placed in the intelligence community and in military intelligence in 2003-2004. No classified discussed, but they talk a lot about their experiences, some off-the-record stuff. None of these people are rabid leftists, Bush-haters, etc.
They’ve all devoted entire classes to how our intelligence was wrong about Iraq having an active CW program in 2003.
We sincerely believed they had a program, as did the Europeans and all the other Arab states - there wasn’t any sort of Bush conspiracy to fabricate a program, though there was subtle-to-not-so-subtle pressure by the administration to get the reporting from the IC that they wanted.
Not a one has given the slightest credence to claims they had an active program/stockpile and it was moved to Syria.
There was indeed a scattering of very old shells, etc. left over from the pre-1991 program. Would have been impossible to find and get rid of them all, even the US turned out to have randomly buried some WWI chemical shells below American University in DC.
An article in the fall 2005 Middle East Quarterly reports that on Israel's Channel 2 on Dec. 23, 2002, Israel's prime minister, Ariel Sharon, stated, "Chemical and biological weapons which Saddam is endeavoring to conceal have been moved from Iraq to Syria."
Define “whole bunch”. Perhaps Obama’s whole bunch is really, really, really big and perhaps Assad doesn’t actually have a whole bunch.
do you think for one moment the Dems would not use this to say” No doubt , in the mystery of what might have happened to the WMD’s maybe, as many have said, they went to Syria and now we see them.”
Your response is accurate, put typically like our conservatives, not politically helpful. We can learn how to play the DEM PR game and STILL be honest, not lying like they do.That was my point.
In the summer of 2005 we found a rail terminal in Anbar Provinceth with a well used road going into Syria where Saddams CW were transported. I also witnessed the results of the WMD on the Kurds. Saddam HAD chemical weapons>>>>>
