UT Professor: Black (& Latino) Students Failing Because They Are Raised by Poor Single Women
London Daily Mail ^ | 08:09 EST, 11 December 2012

Posted on 12/11/2012 11:04:06 AM PST by drewh

A professor at the University of Texas has sparked outrage by claiming black and Hispanic students are failing academically because they have been raised in single parent homes usually by females.

Law professor Lino Graglia was talking to the BBC when he said he could 'hardly imagine a less beneficial or more deleterious experience than to be raised by a single parent, usually female, uneducated and without a lot of money.'

He said the average black performance on SAT test is 200 points lower than that for the average white student and that among the black population almost three quarters of children are now born outside of marriage.

How well do these kids do in maths and reading is basically it and they do less well.

'And race or segregation or history wouldn't matter one bit if that was not the case.

'No doubt the race and segregation may have a lot to do why that's the case, but it is the case and what to do about it now?

'And admitting them into selective schools with large gaps in qualification is not the answer.'

Graglia is no stranger to controversy and was accused of racism in 1997 after telling a conservative student group that black and Mexican-American cultures 'set children up for failure'.

He said: 'They have a culture that seems not to encourage achievement.

'Failure is not looked upon with disgrace.'

Liberals, especially “feel good about myself” sheeperals, need their noses rubbed in that.

They need to be make to admit that the policies they support are HARMFUL, not helpful, and that they are NOT “good people” for supporting them.

However, this is THE reason they support liberal policy - to feel self-righteous.
This is why they won’t ever admit the failing of those policies, because, in effect, it means they are not “good people”, and they can’t handle that.

A friend of my was tutoring and mentoring a black girl about 15 years old. Trying to get her grades up so she could graduate from high school. The girl got pregnant just before age 16 and she had the same answer. She wanted her own apartment. That is pitiful!

I haven’t forgotten, I just don’t care anymore. I’m a stay-at-home wife with a retired husband, so until they start jailing us for thoughtcrimes like they do in England, I have nothing to lose. Plus I’m a Christian fundamentalist, the kind that still believes in Biblical separation, so if they don’t get me for being a racist, they’ll get me for for being a homophobe or something.

I look forward to the day when whites as race have their backs utterly against the wall. Either enough of us will be awake to make a stand that matters, or we’ll be extinct. In which case, my petty revenge is that our civilisation goes with us. Look how fast it’s happening in South Africa, and they still have a few whites left.

To think that a few whites was all it took to rule India and put a man on the moon. Those who hate us better be glad that our “altruism gene” has ramped up to suicidal level because if whites-even as a global minority-ever decided to go all Ghenghis Khan, well...

Children need both parents.

If both parents simply can’t be there, due to death, disability, a divorce they couldn’t stop, or even due to their own incarceration or drug addiction or whatever -

other family needs to step in and do the best they can.

But there is an ideal, and it is ONE committed MOTHER and ONE committed FATHER and human beings do not do as well on any scale without them.

Or would have, if the lethal combination of our altruism and our elites’ ulterior motives hadn’t gotten the better of our collective average intelligence.

“Right, it’s the father’s fault,”

It’s his fault for having sex outside of marriage. Every time we do that, we risk making a baby.

Yes, there is birth control. And every type has a failure rate.

Actually, I read somewhere that whites have greater upper body strength. Some weightlifting contest that some guy from Eastern Europe usually wins was one of the evidences.

The disparity goes back hundreds if not thousands of years and has zero to do with America.

He could say the same thing about generations of poor whites living here in the Ozarks.

I totally agree with Dr. Graglia's observation and fungoking's post. Not only should children be raised by man / woman, parents / guardians, but it's arguably just as important for one or both of the parents to have a college education, preferably the parent that stays at the house to raise the kids if such is the case.

I was at a meeting the other day of leaders of social service organizations tasked with raising the academic achievement levels of low-income, minority youths. They were struggling with the fact that all of their efforts had as of yet come to naught. I suggested that they make the parents responsible: the kids get their grades up, parents get their free goodies. If not, no goodies. My suggestion was met with gasps of disbelief, shouts of derision, and a few acknowledgments that I was right.

If I recall correctly, the author of Freakonomics said something similar. I’ll admit it’s been a while since I read the book, but just going from memory he said the 3 biggest factors influencing a child’s chances of success were:
1: Marital status of the parents.
2: Education level of the parents.
3: Age of the mother when she had her first child (with children of mothers who first gave birth after the age of 24 being more likely to succeed).

There was a line I read once that described that perfectly, I think it was by Miss Manners but I could be wrong. But it said “Men will behave as badly as the women around them will tolerate.”

If women want men to be good husbands, they need to stop sleeping with jerks.

The Great Society has been a huge liberal success.

Raised the black illegitimacy rate from under 20% to over 70% in two generations.

Our fundamental problem is not public schools, it’s the breakdown of the family structure.

It's the lack of a complete family structure, not race, that he is pointing to. It just happens that in most venues, the Black family has collapsed further than the white family. Daniel Patrick Moynihan elucidated this, way back in the mid 60's. It was true then and is true now, although white families now are trying hard to beat the blacks and hispanics in the race to the bottom.

I'd like to take a look at that study. Can you provide a link or a reference please.

...but ultimately, you must take ownership of your grades.

Uh oh, comrade, that sounds suspiciously individualistic. I think it is time for a self-criticism session with your local cadre.

Takes two to tango. Those children didn’t get born due to parthenogenesis.

He’s the last UT prof that actually said something that made sense last fall, right? Can’t even remember the topic, I was so shocked that it came out of UT!

Professor Graglia has a reputation for knowing the truth, and saying it out loud.
