Boehner: ‘Let’s Be Honest … We’re Broke’
CBS DC ^ | December11, 2012

Posted on 12/11/2012 12:27:09 PM PST by Hojczyk

House Speaker John Boehner accused President Barack Obama on Tuesday of slow-walking negotiations to avoid the “fiscal cliff,” and urged him to name specific cuts in government spending he would support as part of any compromise.

“Let’s be honest. We’re broke. The plan we offered is consistent with the president’s call for a balanced approach,” said the Ohio Republican. “We’re still waiting for the White House” to do the same.”

“Longer the White House slow walks this process, the closer we are” to going over the fiscal cliff, Boehner said.

The White House and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi disputed the assertion within moments.

“The irony of this is that the White House offer had very specific cuts, the GOP counteroffer had almost none,” tweeted communications director Dan Pfeiffer.

In remarks on the House floor immediately after Boehner spoke, Pelosi also called on him and the Republican leadership to permit a vote on Obama’s plan to extend expiring tax cuts for most Americans, while letting them lapse at upper incomes. She predicted it would have “overwhelming support.”

Boehner is actually part of the problem —he makes ritualized little objections, providing an illusion of a viable political opposition.

It’s Kabuki, and we need to be rid of non-Conservatives.

Nothing in the article spelled out the cuts Pelosi referred to. Does anyone have any links to any proposal that President Obama has made with regards to spending cuts?

Does anyone have any links to any proposal that President Obama has made with regards to spending cuts?

First, remember that once money has been spent, it creates a baseline. The President has stated that his winding down of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will save close to $2 Trillion from the baseline defense spending. Links are easy to find.

Good grief, can't you just give the guy a break when he does, and says something right? This hate-Boehner mentality is out of control here on FR.

I'm at least willing to see where this thing goes but I do not have good feelings about it because I see no clear solution.

THE problem is the RATS control the Senate and we have the Marxist/Muslim in the WH who hates American and does not want a solution--he wants to destroy America and he may have the power to do it.

Maybe we should give the US Senate and the WH the same treatment Democrats are giving Lansing, MI.

Heck, I'm even willing to include the US House in the treatment. If RATS think it will work for them in MI, why won't it work in DC.

Too bad DC is somewhat insulated by the Christmas season. I'd be willing to go to DC. Someone needs to get the message.

I agree, conservative great grandma. Boehner’s House voted how many times to repeal Obamacare? Boehner’s House voted for the Ryan budget which would have greatly reformed the tax code taking the top tax rate down to 25%.

The problem Boehner has is the structure of the GWB tax cuts which is very flawed because they were designed to expire after a decade-—A VERY SERIOUS FLAW. If if Boehner does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING (which is what many want) the GWB tax rates will AUTOMATICALLY expire on Jan. 1,2013 just weeks away. Boehner has a VERY DIFFICULY hand to play. Obama is holding at least three aces in his hand:

Ace #1 The tx cuts expire automatically in about three weeks.

Ace #2 The Dems control the US Senate

Ace#3 Obama was re-elected (yes I agree there was massive vote fraud but that still does not change the outcome)-—he therefore has significant political capital at this time.

What hand does Boehner have to play? He is clearly on defense, trying to preserve as much as the GWB tax rates as possible.

Here is what I think would be the best deal possible for our side:

The GOP agrees to raise the debt ceiling.
The Dems agree to keep tax rates at their current levels.

I know it’s kicking the can down the road, but probably the best deal we could hope for.

WHY do we have a Dept of Commerce? Would we have no commerce without it? And why the ludicrous proposal for a Department of BUSINESS? The mere concept is silly.

Let’s start by doing away with the EPA and BATF —fire them all, sell the buildings, vehicles, etc.

Dept of Education has IMPROVED Education? No? Why not let it go, also...? In fact we can get rid of very many departments entirely.

If the GOP goes along with the vote on taxes, it will loose all bargaining position. At that point, 0 and the rats will not care what the GOP demands, because the tax problem is done with.

They know it will not solve the budget problem and demand more stimulus and a higher debt ceiling, so as not to shut down government. The GOP has shown fear at that prospect before, and they know a bit of pressure from the media is all it takes. What a mess.

The rats will not give an inch with entitlements, that’s their bread and butter. The GOP should do the same. The only way out is for the other side to blink. The question is, which side will blink first. I would suggest that Boehner make public all negotiations. This back-room crap might work to get pork, but it is leaving the GOP vulnerable to more BS from Pelosi. Be upfront, post all documents and transcripts relating to the negotiation. Full information disclosure will help make the argument and put the rats on the defensive. And do it now!

This country is going down the tubes and I believe with every ounce of me, this is exactly what Obama wants. There will be no satisfactory deal because Obama and the RATS will make sure there won't be a deal. Boehner is in a no-win situation. We need to back him up and show Obama and the RATs we're sick of this.
