Michigan Rep. Justin Amash, booted last week from his seat at the Budget Committee for not towing the GOP line, signaled a possible revolt against House Speaker John Boehner during an interview on Friday.
In the interview with CNNs Starting Point, Rep. Amash said he hasnt committed to voting for Speaker Boehner when the House holds its all-important organizational vote early next year.
Were going to see how the next few weeks go and whether hes willing to make amends, Rep. Amash said. Right now Im not very happy with the Speaker.
When the House re-convenes and organizes on January 3, it will vote on who become the Speaker. Amash and three other conservatives, along with sympathizers, may take revenge by voting against Boehner for the leadership position.
Kansas Rep. Tim Huelskamp, who was also booted from his spot at the Agriculture and Budget committees, indicated he might even show up to vote that day.
You know, the Fiesta Bowl with [Kansas] States the same day, Rep. Huelskamp told the Washington Times.
Speaker Boehner (L) and Majority Leader Eric Cantor Although political observers believe the worst such a mutiny could do is leave a mark on Boehner as an ineffective leader and expose divisions in the Republican majority of Congress, it does highlight a quiet rivalry between the Speaker and Virginia Rep. Eric Cantor. The two had a heated battle for the Speakership in 2011 that left some bitter feelings on both sides, insiders claim.
As a show of no bad feelings between the two, Rep. Cantor nominated Rep. Boehner for the Speakership in the 113th Congress last month.
Although he is Majority Leader of the 112th Congress, Rep. Cantor is still considered the second-in-command behind Boehner.
Georgia Rep. Tom Price denied on Monday rumors that he was mounting a challenge for the Speakership next month, reports the Washington Post.
Rep. David Schweikert, another Tea Party Republican purged by Boehner last week, demurred on Monday when asked if he prefers Cantor or Boehner for the Speakership, reports Politico.
Rep. David Schweikert Praising Rep. Cantor as being one of the truly straight-shooters [he] has dealt with, Rep. Schweikert paused when asked if he wanted to see Rep. Cantor replace Rep. Boehner at the Speakership.
Its bad enough being removed from your committee, Rep. Schweikert said on MSNBCs Morning Joe. Id actually like not to be chairman of janitorial supplies.
In a Fox News interview last Wednesday, Rep. Schweikert compared Speaker Boehner to Newt Gingrich, who was forced from the leadership position in 1998.
A number of conservative groups have called for Speaker Boehner to be replaced for last weeks purge, reports the Hill.
LOL Michigan is a problem for everybody these days.
Hey congressman, lighten up. Under Boehner it won't make any difference. Go order more toilet paper then take a week off for golf.
Then we will see Boner asking Nancy Pelosi for help.
I can't wait.
Congress can and should go Galt now. The taxes automatically increase on everybody rich and middle class, the spending stops being authorized at year end, the debt ceiling is already reached. Just do nothing and let Obama own it while the nation slides down the toilet. The Democrats own this one.
After the implosion, maybe we can get a new free republic. What is the incentive to do anything now? It won’t fix it - nothing can fix this.
Cantor vs Boehner. Weasel vs weeper.
I am not sure there are 17 others who care
Questions come to mind:
Why are committee assignments and chairs being doled out now, prior to the congress that is affected?
If Boehner is ousted, are all these pre-session assignments null and void, and subject to all be re-done in January?
How about West! (no requirement for speaker to be a member of the house)
Cantor and Mccarthy are not the answer either.
All of them need to go.
Could also be a freshmen member with a set who hasn’t been co-opted by the spell of high political office.
Yeah, let the Speaker of the House be vacant for awhile.
Neither am I.
I seem to recall this was in a sci-fi or alternate reality book. Anybody remember?
They should just call boner up and tell him they’re going to beat the orange off his ass and make him cry on T.V.
fta... Rep. Schweikert said on MSNBCs Morning Joe. Id actually like not to be chairman of janitorial supplies.
I saw him on Red Eye Monday night. He has a great sense of humor and came across, to me, as a stand up guy with good values.
Fun Factoid: Who lead the coup to oust Newt Gingrich?
Boehner wants insurance in case of a full blown revolt?
You are so right; those committees mean nothing in regard to serious legislation that will never be passed anyway. They just feed into the ego of the grand poo-bahs.
