If you head down the beach this week, or wander along the edges of San Francisco Bay, you may just be witnessing California's future.
The ocean is getting closer.
The gravitational tug of the moon and sun, not climate change, is responsible for the extreme tides. But volunteers with cameras across the state are using the event to document what California could look like in the coming decades as the warming earth continues to raise sea levels.

Every year, once a year there is a peak tide. It is a favorite of mine, cause its the best day in the year to go clamming. Between each Peak, is a record low. So just hang around 10 hours and take a picture of how the earth was Eighty-eleven Billionsies ago.
When you are on welfare, you got not much to do I see.
Who cares what happens to California? Living on the San Andreas Fault Line and other earthquake lines/zones ain’t smart to begin with. Look at what happened to San Francisco a decade or two ago. Shame it didn’t take out their wacko politicians. That would have been a great environmental improvement. A lot less air and mind pollution.
I live somewhat inland so let the seas rise and the earth sink. It’s going to do it on its own, mankind not withstanding. I’d love to surf in my own backyard with our racoons and possums. You’ve got to see those guys shot a curl.
King Barack Canute Obama can stand in the water and command it to halt rising (if it is), but I don’t think it is going to listen to him.
The waters of the earth have risen and fallen over hundreds of millions of years. I’ve dug up enough fossils to have seen this in the geological/stratigraphic record. Never found a “STOP RISING” sign in all my years of fossil hunting.
If you live near a volcano, there is a good chance that it will erupt one day. If you live on a small island, you know very well that a hurricane is a real possibility.
If you live in Wash. DC metro area, you know damned well that more than half our politicians are corrupt, incompetent, stupid, leftist wackos who wouldn’t know real science if it bit them on the ass. All I have to say is “AL GORE” and you know what I mean.
I met his father and he was a smarter guy than old Fat ALBERT. He would never have fallen for this environmental voodoo science that his son has been promotely, and getting very rich off of.
If glaciers melt, there is a good possibility that the ocean waters will rise, UNLESS that water is taken up as water vapor and redeposited in colder environs as snow/ice.
Land will also RISE when glaciers melt, thus creating a new land configuration for some islands and coastal countries (Greenland, Iceland, Alaska, Kamchutka Peninsula, Antarctica, Patagonia, etc. So what? You can’t do anything about it so sit back and enjoy the new scenery.
Mother Nature is a lot more powerful than humans but the White House, Gore, Mann, and the environmental wackos don’t understand this.
We can help to clean up the manmade messes in our environment (i.e. water and air pollution), but CO2 is a natural product of BREATHING so unless you hold your breath and die, you will have 6-7 BILLION people leaving their carbon breathprints on the world, not to mention animals (ever try to stop a cow from farting methane? You haven’t got a cork big enough to be effective, Jeremy “the Fraud” Rifkin).
Can’t plug up volcanoes, can you? Unless you drop Al Gore’s big butt into one. They produce more poisonous gases in one burst than mankind does in months or years of pollution (think of all those Chinese factories which have no pollution devices and you’ll know why our air is getting worst in some western states).
I’ve been involved in environmental issues for 20 years and the degree of ignorance on the part of politicians, some scientists, and esp. the news media/academia, not to mention our great uneducated public, is frightening beyond belief.
Let the tides rise if they are going to because you can’t do a damned thing about it. Enjoy them. Surf Hollywood and Vegas. Swim with the dolphins.

I wonder if the tides and gravitational anomolies will have any effect on the tectonic plates / fault lines?
Have you seen all of the seismic “clustering” along the San Andreas for the past several months?
A lot of that’s normal I guess, but some say that such clustering is often a prelude to a major quake.
Is the “Big One” getting ready for the Mayan Apocalypse on the 21st?

Sun and moon trigger deep tremors on San Andreas Fault

BERKELEY The faint tug of the sun and moon on the San Andreas Fault stimulates tremors deep underground, suggesting that the rock 15 miles below is lubricated with highly pressurized water that allows the rock to slip with little effort, according to a new study by University of California, Berkeley, seismologists.
“Tremors seem to be extremely sensitive to minute stress changes,” said Roland Bürgmann, UC Berkeley professor of earth and planetary science. “Seismic waves from the other side of the planet triggered tremors on the Cascadia subduction zone off the coast of Washington state after the Sumatra earthquake last year, while the Denali earthquake in 2002 triggered tremors on a number of faults in California. Now we also see that tides the daily lunar and solar tides very strongly modulate tremors.”
In a paper appearing in the Dec. 24 issue of the journal Nature, UC Berkeley graduate student Amanda M. Thomas, seismologist Robert Nadeau of the Berkeley Seismological Laboratory and Bürgmann argue that this extreme sensitivity to stress and specifically to shearing stress along the fault means that the water deep underground is under extreme pressure.
“The big finding is that there is very high fluid pressure down there, that is, lithostatic pressure, which means pressure equivalent to the load of all rock above it, 15 to 30 kilometers (10 to 20 miles) of rock,” Nadeau said. “Water under very high pressure essentially lubricates the rock, making the fault very weak.”
Though tides raised in the Earth by the sun and moon are not known to trigger earthquakes directly, they can trigger swarms of deep tremors, which could increase the likelihood of quakes on the fault above the tremor zone, the researchers say. At other fault zones, such as at Cascadia, swarms of tremors in the ductile zone deep underground correlate with slip at depth as well as increased stress on the shallower “seismogenic zone,” where earthquakes are generated.
