Gov. Jerry Brown is undergoing treatment for prostate cancer, his office announced this afternoon. The governor's office described the condition as a "localized prostate cancer" and said Brown is continuing to work a full schedule while being treated with a short course of radiation. It released a statement from Eric Small, Brown's oncologist at University of California San Francisco. "Fortunately, this is early stage localized prostate cancer, which is being treated with a short course of conventional radiotherapy," Small said in the statement. "The prognosis is excellent, and there are not expected to be any significant side effects." Brown's office said the treatment is expected to be completed the week of Jan. 7. The 74-year-old governor underwent a procedure in April 2011 to remove skin cancer from his nose.

Agree. We are better than that. As much as I loathe him and all he has stood for since his emergence in the sixties, I don’t wish cancer on anyone.
It’s one of the most survivable forms of cancer, and he caught it early. Why do you frame it as being so terrible? Yes, he’ll likely be incontinent and sexually dysfunctional for the rest of his life if he has a prostatectomy, but prevailing medical wisdom has it that you leave the prostate alone. It’s a very slow growing cancer. Many men live 20+ years with it and never see any problems.

With a good surgeon, the batting average on continence and potency is much higher than you imply. Speaking as a guy who’s been there and done that.

Both my grandfather and my father have gone through it, and I suspect I’ll be up to bat at some point. My grandfather was diagnosed in his late 60s and the doctors suggested he’d had it since his 40s. He didn’t have it removed. He’s 78 now, still has his prostate and it functions just fine. No markers for worsening.
My father was diagnosed with early-stage at 54. He’s taking the same route as his father. They go for bi-annual checkups and as of now, neither one of them has any issues.

Amen to that. Newsom is the former mayor of San Francisco and now lieutenant governor who would succeed to the governorship should Brown have to resign. He is the creep who had a adulterous affair with the wife of one of his best friends and campaign manager. A real gem of a human being who makes Brown look like a Reagan conservative.

I don’t wish cancer are anybody. I would say that he should resign and take care of himself, but I shudder to think about his replacement. Jerry Brown looks like Ronald Reagan if you compare him to the other Democrats in Sacramento. The California legislature is a Che Guevera fan club.
If you have the slow grow, you probably are ok. My dad died from the fast grow version, and it was a very long painful exit, so I opted for surgery.

There was a story a week or so ago in the London Telegraph about the husband of a *senior* member of the British Parliament and how he died “like a battery hen” (I think that’s the way it was worded) in a government hospital.It spoke of appalling abuse and neglect.Thank God that neither Osama Obama nor Governor Moonbeam (or their families) will ever have to endure that sort of thing.Folks in flyover country,OTOH....

Brown was a little like Jimmy Carter. If Carter had been more competent, he might have done the country more harm (or not, since he did enough harm as an incompetent).
If Brown had been more focused and not so easily distracted, he might have been more dangerous (unless you believe that his geeky, goofy side made it easier for him to work his way into positions where he could do real harm).
