Fiscal Cliff Threatens Federal Aid for Home Heat
ABC News ^ | December 12, 2012 | CLARKE CANFIELD Associated Press

Posted on 12/12/2012 3:33:06 PM PST by mdittmar

Poor and elderly Americans who rely on aid from the federal government to heat their homes stand to get less help this year if Congress and the White House fail to figure out a way to avoid the combination of tax increases and automatic spending cuts known as the fiscal cliff.

If that happens, there'll be an automatic 10 percent reduction in funds from the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. But the plight of those in the estimated 6.9 million households who rely on the money to keep warm hardly appears to be a priority for lawmakers in Washington, said Faye MacDonald, 70, a Bangor retiree who relies on the federal program to heat her small home.

"I feel like a little drop of water in a big pond that they don't care about," she said.

Congress is in no mood to approve emergency spending for heating aid as in past years, said Mark Wolfe of the National Energy Assistance Directors' Association. Already, states have received less money than initially projected because of the pending fiscal cliff.

Those poor and elderly are just gonna have to suck it up and become kindling for all of the fireplaces in The White House this winter. *SMIRK*

The more I read about this ‘fiscal cliff’ stuff, the more I think it’s all going to amount to a puddle of warm spit and Government will just go on spending and spending and spending...with little or no consequence.

A 10% reduction in funds from last year or a 10% reduction in what they were planning to spend this year?

Good. Why do I have to pay for others heating bills? Move south you morons.

And why are all the supposed “enlightened” ones in the NE still using the antiquated home heating oil furnaces? I’m surprised we don’t subsidize their outhouses.

Golly, unemployment benefits, home heating subsidies, seems there’s lots of liberal goodies expiring at the end of the year.

And I’m sure that even with that 10% cut, the program will still be funded more this year than last year.

Paul Ryan has already thrown the elderly over the cliff. Do you liberal media types think he’ll care if they’re cold? Hahaha. Bring on the next scare tactic!

There's actually a pretty good reason the far Northeast uses heating oil ~ it used to be cheap. Now it's not.

They can be converted to natural gas but that takes time, and probably a few more pipelines, and undoubtedly the Democrats in New York gotta' get out of the way of fraking.

Governor Cuomo is the one freezing people in Maine to death this year. Last year it was Obama's turn because he refused to approve the oil pipeline from Canada. Next year it'll be someone else in the can.

You may have noticed other regional differences in heating fuel choice ~ to a degree (that's a pun) that depends on availability of fuels ~ eg. coal, or oil, and the average climate ~ long, nasty and brutish, like New England, or gentle breezes, friendly people like the Mid Atlantic ~ where we can use heat pumps which run on electricity from whatever source (actually mostly coal).

New Englanders got caught with their britches down this year ~ but they voted for it. Those Democrats screwing with them are their own chosen saviors. It's going to get worse before it gets better.

Hm.

Most of these people receiving aid are in blue states.
Most of them voted for Obama.

Screw it. They voted for this, let them freeze or not as their abilities and finances dictate.

When I was in college here in MN I rented a house with a friend. We had to pay big lump sums to fill our tank with gas, as opposed to steady lower bills. One dark winter we let it slide for a week or so, and that was something. Four layers of clothes, hats, gloves, and scarves inside. The worst was getting out of the shower.

But it wasn’t so bad. I didn’t die. Gave me reason to study in the library and show up to work on time.

Or get a tax credits for wood burning appliances (renewable fuel wood, pellets etc). But for seniors and others living alone or with limited mobility in an era when extended families don’t exist, I do get that these tasks can become extremely difficult, even insurmountable.

Faye McDonald is relying on me to heat her home, not a “federal program”.

Unless they are paying her bill out of the 40 cents for every dollar of the fed budget that Bernanke and Geithner create out of electrons.

If there ever were denizens of outhouses, it is the liberal/leftist politicians of New England. SHIT IN, SHIT OUT!

I do wonder how many of the old farts have kids with beuko-bucks, that could easily help them out. I suspect the answer is MANY, if not a majority.

It’s time that the government stop trying to be a provider to all - I have kids, and they have $16 Trillion in debt and growing BIG-TIME every year. Enough is enough.

If you voted for more government your whole life then you can freeze to death. If you are my neighbor I'll cut the firewood and heat your house. But if all you want is government assistance then good riddance.

Sounds cold blooded but so is Communism. It's so cold blooded it will kill all of us just for “wanting” to be free.

A top to bottom overhaul of Indolence policies is needed. Indolence costs are buried across the spectrum of government. Each citizen is only owed what they earn. Government is not responsible for cradle to grave care for those who will not earn for themselves.

If the Christian religion may not act to worship in the public square, then Christian ethos - caring for a fellow man - has no place in policy making - or guilt tripping Christian citizens to part with their wealth

State funds will make up the difference as needed.
States typically add extra.

http://liheap.ncat.org/news/nov12/vt.htm
“November 15 — The Vermont Emergency board last month unanimously approved $8.8 million in state funds to supplement the Vermont LIHEAP this winter.

It’s the second year in a row the state has added money to LIHEAP and the amount is a 44 percent increase from the $6.1 million the state provided last year. It comes out of funds the legislature allocated to cover reductions in the federal budget. The board’s action stemmed from a request by Gov. Peter Shumlin earlier in October...”

When I was 18, I left home and moved into a small house with two other girls. We were all working minimum wage jobs and come winter, couldn’t afford the oil for the oil heater. Guess what. We did without. One of the coldest winters in 100 years and all we had was a fireplace but we couldn’t afford wood by the end of Feb. So we used our blankets and sucked it up.

I have been cold and I have been hungry. I see few today who have endured that especially when I am standing in line watching as Big Mama slides a ‘Peach Card’ food stamp card through the slot before she puts in her pin number while she pulls up her pants in preparation of wheeling her overflowing cart out to her two or three year old car while her passel of snot nosed brats is running through the store screaming and tearing up the place.

But, I digress...
