Simple sitting test may determine your mortality (bad title...video at source)

A simple sitting and standing test can determine your mortality, according to a study published in the European Journal of Cardiovascular Prevention.

The test screens for musculo-skeletel fitness and is an assessment of your ability to sit and then rise – unaided – from the floor.

The study was performed in Brazil by Dr. Claudio Gil Araujo and his team at the Clinimex-Exercise Medicine Clinic in Rio de Janeiro.

Araujo and his colleagues looked at more than 2,000 middle-aged men and women in 2002. He followed up with them approximately six years later, or until their date of death.

Before the test, Araujo gave the subjects simple instructions. “Without worrying about the speed of movement, try to sit and then to rise from the floor, using the minimum support that you believe is needed,” Araujo said.

As regards the title...the sitting test may speak to or in some way indicate your mortality (life span), but it does not determine it.

LOL.

My dad lived to 94 (passed away last July 19th)...and it would take him 30 minutes and an infinite number of elbows and hands to get up off the floor (to which he would fall from time to time).

I think this test is bogus in most ways...but still offers us seniors something to work toward.;-)

I highly recommend calling the dog over the cat. The cat said, “You ain’t gonna need those eyes anymore, right? ‘Cause they look delicious.”

How ridiculous. I couldn’t do the cross legged stand up thing when I was a skinny little kid much less now. I might be dead this time next week but it won’t be in any way related to this test.

I wonder how many high school students can sit cross legged and stand up without assistance?

Today's students? I don't know. I could until well past the age of 30.

Now? No.

My mom went to assisted living when she could no longer get off the floor by herself. That turned out to be 7 months prior to her death. Multiple rounds of congestive heart failure took her out over the April to November time frame. The final blow was diagnosis of cancer in both lobes of her lungs a week before she passed.

Unfortunately, physical fitness is of little use against cancer.

I’m 59, healthy right now, work out in the gym for an hour every day, and could still very easily die in a few years.

Sorry about your Mom.

There is no antidote for missing a loved one.

Purely anecdotal of course, but I believe exercise is a great way to fight cancer.

It lifts your spirit, it gives you energy and hope (geez...not hopium again)...it tells your body and mind--right down to the cellular level--that you are willing to fight for your life.

At least if you exercise, you will die fighting. And that can't be a bad thing.

Ok, so because I got a line drive to my knee, and can barely get off the floor without gyrations, because the knee wont bend - apparently I am dead already according to the test.
