(CNN) -- The United States is to deploy 400 troops and two Patriot air-defense missile batteries to Turkey in the coming weeks to defend against potential threats from Syria, defense officials said Friday.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta signed the order en route to Turkey, where he is visiting Incirlik Air Base, Pentagon spokesman George Little told reporters.

I hope they read the Turkish tax regulations before bringing the Patriot missiles in. You have to (even military equipment) declare each and every individual piece of equipment, and someone from the Turk tax office must stamp the form as official. This normally takes at least a week. If you fail to do this....when you leave....your hardware stays there in Turkey, with the Turks.

I’m sure that would mean Barry would bypass their stamping.

This is a huge mistake. They need American troops to operate these batteries and my sense is they have nothing to do with Syria. The next question is, would they shoot down Israeli hardware?

Protecting the Kurds from another Sarin Gas attack, after the last one from Sadaam Hussein?

This is an indication that lethal gas will be put into Scuds.

Before you know it, we’ll have boots on the ground in Syria.

Let’s hope no one is surrounded and cut off - with the current Commander-in-Chief, the air support may be a little late.

Like three days late.

Refresh my memory.....Was it not Turkey who would not allow our troops to enter from their southern border into Iraq during the last Iraqi war?

Now Obama and his minion Pinata is sending our boys/girls to possibly die to protect these Turkish a$$wipes with our hardware?

More cannon fodder to advance the Arab Spring and the MB Jihadis????

This is one screwed up administration of misfits.

Kosovo all over again. Clinton supported Al-Quada in Kosovo now we are doing it again in Syria.

It isn't a mistake if you keep doing it

But the question is: Will chem weapons be used by Assad or by "rebels" (under orders from Obama) hoping to implicate Assad and draw NATO into the conflict?

This is good news. All this time I’ve been hearing about what financial trouble we’re in. Clearly, we’re flush and ready to spend.

Very good question and one that should be added to whatever was really happening in Benghazi.

Come on, now. Everyone knows there are no WMD’s in the Middle East - that's just a Republican myth.

The Turks have a decent relationship with Isreal.

I think there is another game going on.

If our troops get slaughtered I’m sure the media will be right there to smooth it over, lie, and cover up for obamster. I’m not sure we’d even hear about it.

So we’re going to protect Turkey from no real threat, but we couldn’t protect our Libyan ambassador from a real one??
