There were different rules for the mentally ill back then.

As a member and later President of our High School Rifle Club, I carried my .22 rifle to school on meeting days. We used a range that used the space under the gym floor. A low ceiling to be sure. Of course we were very safety conscious, never carried loaded rifles, and there was never an incident. Those were different times, the 1950’s.

Or when I was in school in the early 40s and teaching school in the mid fifties. When I look back on those days it seems like another world.
