Adam Lanza, the 20-year-old who killed 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut this morning, was "obviously not well," a relative told ABC News.
Family friends in Newtown also described the young man as troubled and described his mother Nancy as very rigid. "[Adam] was not connected with the other kids," said one friend.
Late today, police said Nancy Lanza's body was found in the family home. According to sources, Lanza shot his mother in the face, then left the house armed with at least two semi-automatic handguns and a semi-automatic rifle.
State and federal authorities believe his mother may have once worked at the elementary school where Adam went on his deadly rampage, although she was not a teacher, according to relatives, perhaps a volunteer.

Children stabbed in attack at Chinese school
Police say nearly two dozen children injured in central China province of Henan by knife-wielding villager.
At least 22 children and one adult have been injured in a knife attack outside a primary school in central China, police say.
An officer said the attack, in the village of Chengping in Henan province, happened shortly before 8am on Friday, as students were arriving for classes.
The attacker, believed to be 36-year-old villager Min Yingjun, is in police custody, said officials.
A county hospital administrator said the man first attacked an elderly woman, then students, before being subdued by security guards. Two students have since been transferred to “better-equipped” hospitals outside the county.
China has witnessed a spate of school stabbings in recent years, leading to more security guards being deployed across the vast country.
In March 2010, eight children were murdered in Nanping, Fujian province, by 41-year-old knifeman Zheng Minsheng. The attacker was executed a month later, hours before 33-year-old Chen Kangbing injured 16 students and a teacher at Hongfu Primary School in Leizhou, Guangdong.
In April 29 2010, 28 school children - mostly four-year-olds - were stabbed alongside two teachers and a security guard in Taixing, Jiangsu. On April 30, Wang Yonglai committed suicide after using a hammer to attack preschool children in Weifang, Shandong.
Further attacks in the months and years following have left 11 children and four adults dead, and several more injured.

Just 2 years ago that would have sounded COMPLETELY crazy, right?
Can you imagine anything even crazier...? I can, and I think we’re seeing it.
I think also it’s no coincidence he had his little “cry” in the Brady Room of the WH, and I think they’re again “not letting a crisis to go waste”.

a tragedy all around... would that medication control be the real culprit v. gun control which the media will trumpet as the cause celebre.. sounds like we need more media taking their meds as well.. and that cooler heads prevail.
Obama has a history of using his middle finger to wipe his brow. This time it was nowhere in evidence.
This man is not the only crazy person in this picture.
Who is the person in the woods that was taken in to custody?
It seems to me that his mother erred by not keeping her firearms inaccessible by such a mentally troubled son.
Father wasn’t killed then?
I could have sworn the second time he wiped the corner of his eye with his left hand he had the middle finger prominently displayed. Perhaps I was too distracted by his faux crying.
That is not a quote from me.
Was the father in NJ or CT?
And, this story becomes convoluted with time.
The mother was rigid. Great, now they’re going to blame the parent. Maybe she tried for years to get her son help and the medical system didn’t respond. I know someone trying to get an elderly relative with Alzheimers into a nursing home and it’s a months-long horrible slog.
That’s the way it seems to me too. We’ll have to wait and see whether they were locked up and how he got them. There are a lot of possibilities, everything from a very tragic accident to outright negligence.
This information changes a lot...now that she’s not a teacher, just possibly a volunteer...
Here is a local newspaper link:
The Hungerford massacre occurred in Hungerford, Berkshire, England, on 19 August 1987. The gunman, 27-year-old Michael Robert Ryan (b. 18 May 1960), armed with two semi-automatic rifles and a handgun, shot and killed sixteen people including his mother, and wounded fifteen others, then fatally shot himself.
The Firearms (Amendment) Act 1988 was passed in the wake of the massacre, which banned the ownership of semi-automatic centre-fire rifles and restricted the use of shotguns with a magazine capacity of more than three rounds. Ryan’s collection of weapons had been legally licensed.
Maybe she acquired them to protect herself from her own son.
