Like most issues, the issue of gun control by the left goes a lot deeper than the prohibition of gun ownership.
The left are a godless bunch who have substituted a political ideology for religion. Their God is the State and their moral code is relativity. The left has no means to influence societal ills other than through legislation. So, like with the prohibition of alcohol, the left wants to legislate away the means, rather than the cause.
The cause is cultural rot and turning away from God. Without a belief in God, there is no future, there is only the here and now, life has no value, and there is no respect for anyone or anything, just the desire for instant gratification.
