Canada officially becomes first country to withdraw from Kyoto agreement

OTTAWA — Canada has officially withdrawn from the Kyoto climate agreement.

The death notice comes years after the Stephen Harper government made clear it rejected the terms that were negotiated by the Jean Chretien government in 1997.

According to the agreement, Canada would reduce its greenhouse gases 6% below 1990 levels by 2012.

Environment Minister Peter Kent pointed to the fact the United States and China - the two largest carbon emitters - never signed on as reason to abandon the agreement. And one year ago Canada officially announced its repudiation of it, becoming the first country in the world to do so.

Green Party Leader Elizabeth May - an environmentalist and fiscal conservative - called it a "day of shame".

"Harper's Conservatives present us with a fake contradiction between environmental protection and a healthy economy," May said in a statement.

Tory MP Rob Anders called Kyoto a "tremendous waste of resources."

"The fact we were the first country to pull out gives us credibility; we were the first to say, 'the emperor wears no clothes,'" Anders said Friday.

Liberal MP Stephane Dion, a main player in Canada becoming a signatory, called it a sad day.

"Of course Kyoto was not enough. But even though, it was the beginning of something more compelling for the next phase."

Dion was so in support of the agreement he named his dog Kyoto.

"I'm sad to say the dog is in better shape than the agreement it was named after."

They are thinking way ahead. They see a country to their south in trouble and may invite a few of it’s states to become part of their country someday. Will the first invite go to say....North Dakota.

Yes, we never should have signed onto it in the first place

Umm...we didn't:

Canada, you were right, you guys DID win the war of 1812. So the State of Michigan rightfully belongs to you.

I agree. But you underestimate the extent of their victory.Every state within 300 miles of the border (except the Dakotas and Alaska,we might need them) rightfully belongs to Canada.Spoils of war, after all.And as a special bonus prize they get to take California as well.

It was only a year or so ago that I discovered Red Green. It's been on a nearby PBS station for some time but until recently I ignored it.Classic stuff...one of the best comedy shows, apart from several Britcoms,I've seen in years.Laugh In and Married With Children were the last US comedy shows that ever came close to Red Green.

When Dartman said “we” he was referring to Canada.

IIRC the USA did sign on but the Senate rejected it.

Yes, we never should have signed onto it in the first place, but Canada had a dark period earlier during the Chretien Liberal years.

Harper is slowly but surely cleaning up the mess that was left behind. I find the timing to be quite interesting… check out the top posting on www.wattsupwiththat.com “IPCC AR5 draft leaked, contains game-changing admission of enhanced solar forcing – as well as a lack of warming to match model projections, and reversal on ‘extreme weather’”. Politicians who recognized AGW for the scam that it was still have been forced to tip toe around the issue since to not do so (when a huge percentage of the voters had bought into the scam) would still run the risk that the scammed were great enough in numbers to throw them out of office. I suspect that Harper took a look and figured that the timing was just perfect to set this right…the pendulum has swung and it’s getting harder and harder to find someone (other than Scuzzooki and the Gorecle) who remain on this sinking ship to defend the indefensible.
