Terrible news today. When will politicians find courage to ban automatic weapons? As in Oz after similar tragedy. - Rupert Murdoch | Twitter

++++

News Corp. chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch expressed support for an automatic weapons ban tonight following today's shooting in Newtown, Conn.

"Terrible news today. When will politicians find courage to ban automatic weapons?," Murdoch wrote on Twitter.

Murdoch made a similar call following the theater shooting in Aurora, Colo., in July: "We have to do something about gun controls. Police license okay for hunting rifle or pistol for anyone without crim or pscho record. No more," he tweeted.

News Corp. owns Fox News, where contributors have been objecting to calls for gun control throughout the day.

America banned automatic weapons in the 1930s.

They weren’t actually banned. The congress purposely didn’t do an outright ban because they thought the Supreme Court would declare the law unconstitutional.

They are restricted, have to be registered and a tax paid. There are actually quite a few around and almost none have been involved in crime.

Fact Check - Automatics Weapons are not banned.

LA Times - October 16, 2012
http://articles.latimes.com/2012/oct/16/news/la-pn-romney-illegal-automatic-weapons-20121016

+++ The National Firearms Act of 1934, the Gun Control Act of 1968 and the Hughes Amendment in 1986 have all placed limits on how automatic guns can be bought and sold, but did not make it illegal to possess them entirely.

Purchasing one requires submitting fingerprints and photographs to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, going through an FBI criminal background check, and paying a $200 tax, among other requirements. Only automatic weapons manufactured and registered with the federal government before 1986 can be bought, owned and sold. +++

These displays of ignrance are too rampant to be coincidental.

The goal can only be to fool low information Americans into thinking that “atutomatic” means something very different than what it really means.

I agree with Murdoch. Except for a few collectors with a class III stamp, the federal government right now is the only entity which owns automatic weapons. I favor barring the federal government from possessing automatic weapons.

Ack, we should have seen it coming. CBS just said the mother of the shooter was worried about her home during a collapse of the economy so bought the guns for protection. IOW, she was, you know, one of those wacko preppers!!!!!!

Everyone is looking at the Guns—Look at the nut who pulled the trigger. We need to get these folks in mental hospitals! They need to be rounded up and locked away for their own good. Once this was common—it needs to be re-instated. The Homeless guy talking to himself on the street should be picked up and given treatment not left to live on the street—Thats cruel. I have know three people killed by Homeless. This guy who killed those folks was under care-—he shouldn’t have been living at home. You can’t tell me there were no signs that he might snap. We need to take care of people who are nuts. Lots of people need these institutions—now.

He called for a ban on the day of the shootings? Not much thought there, then. Sounds like an emotional reflex action.
