The Democratic chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee says he plans to hold a hearing in January to consider changing federal drug laws to allow people to possess up to one ounce of marijuana.

On Thursday, Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) released a letter that he sent earlier this month to Gil Kerlikowske, the director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), asking the nation’s drug czar how the administration intends to proceed now that two states have legalized marijuana use. …

Sure, let’s make the speed limit 55 and wonder later why everyone drives 64.

Great idea. Now, all that has to happen is 50 (57?) states pass their version of the law.

This should NEVER EVER happen on a national scale. And, as ‘Rats tend to do, EVERYTHING they propose has some backdoor agenda, and this one is aimed at putting another nail in federalism.

I suspect there will be more than a few Republicans willing to take him up on this.

Obama has just de-facto legalized it by announcing he will not enforce existing Federal law in CO or WA. Hence he is giving the green light for more states to follow suit. By 2016 I suspect a minium of 6 and probably more will have taken him up on this, and the GOP will be fighting a losing battle against the Electoral College fumbling over whether or not to reverse course and go after them.

I think Sen. Depends will find a lot of Pubbies eager to diffuse that ticking bomb.

I looked at that headline and thought, “Man! Try to divide that up among 340 million people... you won’t even get one hit out of it.”

I was just going to say exactly that. Let each state decide its own drug laws.

Keep the feds out completely.

>>>This should NEVER EVER happen on a national scale. And, as ‘Rats tend to do, EVERYTHING they propose has some backdoor agenda, and this one is aimed at putting another nail in federalism.<<<

Actually, the nail has already been hammered. Obama has essentially declared another federal law (about marijuana) null and void, in the same manner as he declared the Defense of Marriage Act null and void. No debate. No vote. Just a decree from the executive branch.

This sadly reminds me of what I can recall dimly from my History of Rome class back in college. Augustus becomes the supreme ruler, and, ironically, his first decree is the re-establishment of the Republic. (I’m probably wrong about this, but I think my gist is close to the mark.) Obama has decreed that states can violate a federal law. He’s acting like a dictator - in this case, a benevolent dictator, but a dictator nonetheless. He’s not advancing the ideal of limited government and shared power among the states - he’s advancing the idea that the federal government is the ultimate arbiter of what can and can’t be done.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it. (Bad joke...)

If it’s so great and on a legal push now (due to obamaland) why limit it at all? Seriously? If it’s ok to have, why have any limits on amount?

So Obama’s union buddies kill Twinkies and now he’s gonna legalize the munchies? Go figure.

IMO this is being proposed because of Florida new law for drug testing welfare recipients...Imagine if every state passed such(Georgia up next), people would have to decide to get high or get free money...this cuts it off at the pass...hidden agenda..

That sounds pretty likely. And with obamacare there will be a lot of government profit in getting people hooked on weed and then supplying it as well.

LOL! No kidding.....And I’m sure “Food Czar” Moochelle will have something to say about the foods your “ALLOWED” to have while having the munchies. That’s right citizen enjoy your gov’t approved marijuana but no salty/fatty snacks are allowed afterwards....also no large sodas for your dry mouths.

Legalization is inevitable, IMHO.

There's lots of money to be made in the drug trade, and gov't needs a new revenue stream. Enforcement and detention will morph into regulation and taxation. The DEA, rather than costing $Billions a year, could actually show a profit...
