Deputies: Tuscaloosa gas station shooting may have been self defense(AL)

Authorities say that a 23-year-old suspected shooter has been questioned and released. Lt. Kip Hart says that investigators have reason to believe the shooting happened in self-defense.

Three other suspects in the case have been arrested and charged. Their exact role in the shooting is unclear as the investigation continues.

One of the people arrested is charged with carrying a concealed weapon and possession of marijuana.

Some advice here....generally, if you are on the interstate near Birmingham or Tuscaloosa....don’t stop to refuel, period. Fill up fifty miles before the two cities or after them. You don’t ever pull off the interstate in either town to do anything...even use the bathroom. Most folks who grew up in Bama....know this as a fact.

Over the years I have filled up in Hoover (I-65) and Mountain Brook (US Hwy to Auburn and Columbus GA) and not had any problems...though Hoover area looked a little rough. I even spent one night at the Motel 6 in T-Loosa (though w a large group of football fans). But, I will keep this in mind in the future

Though, I have stopped and refueled in parts of Houston that would make the B-ham/T-loosa corridor look as safe as Iceland

My family always used Tuscaloosa as an overnight stop, roughly halfway between New Orleans and the Smokies. Usually stayed near the university campus at a pre-Interstate motel called the Moon Winx Lodge. Never saw anything troubling in that area, but it has been twenty years since I was last there. I’d be surprised it it hasn’t changed for the worse.

How Alabama has changed.

When I was very young, one could go to downtown Birmingham in the wee hours of the morning and be perfectly safe. You see, that was because the infamous Bull Connor was the chief of the police there. He kept the thugs in check with his large—literally large: the police officers then had to be at least 6 feet tall—that was willing to use roughness, if necessary.

But then, ol’ Bull was removed from office and we see the results today. Hell, I am leery of going to downton B’ham even in the daylight.

You are then no doubt familiar with the name ‘Larry Langford’. His slide into lawlessness was quite shocking to me, since I knew him when we played tennisagainst each other in the B’ham Park League.

Yes, I know of Mr. Langford, but I was long gone from Birmingham when he became mayor.

We accidentally exited into East St. Louis and had to stop for directions, (BTW, boss stayed in locked van) you should have seen the looks from the locals, every person we talked to or even drove by looked at us puzzled, (going as far as turning around on the street to watch us drive by) but we had ZERO issues.

(I am a God fearing man, and I am not discounting the fact that daily prayer probably saved my life here.)

However, it also may have helped that we were dressed in ties (fall or springtime, we had jackets on, as well) and driving a big white van. (Computer repair, but I can only speculate what everyone else was thinking.)
