Even in Medical School, Affirmative Action Rules
AmericanThinker ^ | December 16, 2012 | Chris Mondie

When it comes to becoming a physician, the academic rigors, years of schooling, and personal sacrifice common to the effort are well-known. This process is a sort of rite of passage, an intellectual marathon that only the best and brightest can complete. As such, medical schools should select candidates best-suited to excel throughout school and cultivate the skills that will allow them to practice in the best health care system in the world. The process by which these candidates are selected, however, may come as a shock.

In examining documents made public by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), it becomes apparent that race plays a disturbingly large role in the medical student application process. The documents provide data about the applicant pool from years 2009-2011 -- namely, the number of applicants within a given GPA and MCAT score range, and how many of those applicants gained acceptance to a school. These data, it turns out, are organized by race.

A quick scan of the documents reveals that white students applying to medical school with a GPA in the 3.40-3.59 range and with an MCAT score in the 21-23 range (a below-average score on a test with a maximal score of 45) had an 11.5% acceptance rate (total of 1,500 applicants meeting these criteria). Meanwhile, a review of minority students (black, Latino, and Native American) with the same GPA and MCAT range had a 42.6% acceptance rate (total of 745 applicants meeting these criteria). Thus, as a minority student with a GPA and MCAT in the aforementioned ranges, you are more than 30% more likely to gain acceptance to a medical school.

What do you mean, "even."

Not "even," but "especially."

What do you call the person who graduates at the bottom of the medical school class? Doctor. Quality matters. Mistakes go to the graveyard or spend a lifetime maimed.

So many of these people just don't understand how detrimental Affirmative Action really is.

If there was no AA, I couldn't less if my doctor looked like Tupac Shakur as long as he had a respectable diploma.

Now....I wouldn't trust any sheepskin on the wall of a black doctor unless I knew him personally or was recommended to me from a trusted source.

Instead....I'll just keep looking down the roster until I find a Cohen or Steinberg.

Race plays a major part in medical school admissions? Nah, can’t be. The Supreme Court settled that in 1978 in Regents of the University of California v. Bakke, 438 U.S. 265.

A black MD says he greatly opposes Affirmative Action because of how evil it is. And he adds that it hurts his medical career, too. Turns out that most potential patients don’t want his services ... even though he worked his way through medical school on his own merits without “AA”

patients just assume that he MAY have been (or probably was) admitted and passed through based on his race, and so they do not want to risk their lives with him

These days, Patel or Park or Yee. Have you seen the new crop of residents and med students?

There is a case to be made for a degree of affirmative action because a black doctor is more likely to have an office in black neighborhoods and to understand cultural issues affecting health and communicate better with black patients than a white doctor.

I’m talking about American black doctors, not the scions of the elite of Nigeria or Barbados.

And you should measure - does the black doctor benefitting from affirmative action typically work in a black neighborhood? Does he in fact communicate more effectively with black patients? Medicine today is full of “best practices” and “measured outcomes.” If affirmative action does not result in the desired outcomes, then dump it.

And when I say a degree of affirmative action, I don’t mean that black students should be nearly four times as likely to be accepted than white or Asian students with the same grades - that’s going too far.

Believe it or not, that Dr is correct.I know of black people who will not go to a black Dr because of AA.
Where I work in Peds,90% of the residents are Asian women. It has become very rare to see a white or black male becoming a Pediatrician.

Hmmm. Applicants with a 42.6% acceptance rate are more than 3 times more likely (i.e., 300% rather than 30%) to gain acceptance than those with an 11.5% acceptance rate.

That actually would be more than 3 times as likely, not 30% more likely, to get accepted.

"According to Pew Research, 54 percent of white voters under 30 voted for Romney and only 41 percent for Obama. That's the same percentage Reagan got from the entire white population in 1980."
-Ann Coulter's 12/5/12 column.

I don't know about the young Asian-American vote.

it is a similar problem for black law school graduates too...
people know that some of (even) our leading law schools admit blacks with lower grades and then pass them through no matter what...
so now, the really good, well-qualified black attorneys cannot be trusted to do good work and clients try to avoid hiring them

we need to get back to admitting the best students, regardless of skin color, and then grading them fairly too (the colleges need to be willing to flunk failures, not just pass them through and bestow degrees on them because of their skin color, sexual preferences, or whatever)

the educational system is helping destroy America from within.

May all those pushing AA in the selection of future physicians some day end up in an emergency room with their lives in the hands of an Affirmative Action doctor.......

Without going into the sordid details, I was harmed by my black dentist’s incompetence. I have to wonder if he was an affirmative action admission to dental school.

Still, 41 percent. They should know better.

Asians was something like 70% or more. Age-wise I don’t know, but certainly they know they’re being discriminated against and the hypocrisy thereof.

I can't agree with you on that point.

All affirmative action is bad.

I agree with Thomas Sowell...if you don't have the grades to gain entrance to Harvard, Johns Hopkins, etc., go to where you WILL earn admission. There are plenty of good state supported Medical Schools and other fine alternatives.

But I agree with you about the foreign doctors. My "go to" general practitioner is Dr. Htwe (pronounced "Twee"). He's from somewhere in S.E. Asia and a marvelous doctor.

Of course....most of them are trying to escape their socialized medicine at home and come here where they will be appreciated.

Obamacare will stop that flood of good, ambitious doctors in their tracks.

One notes the almost complete absence of black commercial and airline pilots. Either you can fly to spec or you can’t.

Ann doesn’t mention that the democrats only got 36% of the white vote that year, Reagan got 56% and Anderson 7%.

In her never ending effort to prop up this years Anderson type figure (Romney), she plays a little loose with the wording, for instance rounding it off as “the same percentage”.
