Texas school (and others) have armed teachers, administrators, reject "gun free" attitudes

David Thweatt, superintendent of the tiny Harrold school district in northwest Texas, believes his staff is ready. Besides special locks and security cameras, an undisclosed number of staff members and teachers carry concealed handguns. Thweatt said the "guardian plan," which drew international attention when it was implemented in 2008, definitely enhances student safety. "Is that 100 percent? No," Thweatt said Friday in a telephone interview. "Nothing is 100 percent. But what we do know is that we've done all we can to protect our children."

” “Nothing is 100 percent. But what we do know is that we’ve done all we can to protect our children.””

No, he’s right, but I will bet you that no one ever even tries anything at one of his schools, because they know they are not likely to be successful.

In rural Texas schools, where the nearest sheriff’s department is half an hour or more away, superintendents have had access to their own fire arms for many years. That is just using common sense, a short commodity in many parts of this country.

These shooters know that shooting up schools with provide a very high bodycount. The kids sit all day in tiny areas with no way out.....like shooting ducks in a barrel. They also know shooting kids gets biggest headlines. the younger the kids the better. They also learned a movie theatre is a good target because people are enclosed in a small area with no way out also.

I’m shocked that terrorists haven’t taken advantage of the flismy security at schools. a skinny ugly looking male was able to kill almost 30 people in a few minutes. Imagine what a 6 or 7 islamic terrorist with a well planned operation could accomplish? they could probably wipe out the whole school and they wouldn’t need any bombs.

Wanna play the Blame Game? Okeydokey.

“It was the NRA.” “It was them redneck, no-good gun owners.” etc, etc, etc. You guys had three days to spew your crap, now it is my turn.

In 1993, the Federal Law Gun-Free Schools Act of 1993 (HR.987 of the 103 Congress) was introduced by Rep. George Miller (still seated for CA) and stated that:

To amend the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 to require each State, as a condition of receiving Federal assistance under such Act, to implement a gun control program in its schools, and to establish a program of grants to local educational agencies for purposes of purchasing crime prevention equipment and training security personnel.

As with all things in Congress, the last part was promptly dissolved into nothingness as proven by the the actions or Mr. Lanza. And the law basically created a hunting preserve for the criminally insane when the states promptly followed suit and enacted their local versions of Gun Free Schools.
So the reason why your kids might be right now in a building which will provide no protections in case of a deranged killer is the “Honorable” George Miller.

This type of protection by school administrators and staff needs to happen across America!

And in the meantime we must focus on the fact that parents ALWAYS know if they have a child who is a danger to himself/herself. Many parents are in denial and do not seek help until too late. AND when and if they DO seek help, there is very little help available to them through mental health coverage.

How about banning government schools . where the heck did the idea come from that it is the responsibility of government to educate our kids, keep us safe etc. Ok carry a government bureaucrat with you liberals to protect and educate you morons.

The media makes mass shooters household names in order so that more shooters will do it. Then the media can call for the taking away of more of our individual rights ( gun rights).

They want to take away our right to educate and defend our families with our own guns.

I suspect they'll be watching with great interest as to what kind of security precautions tend to be laid out at schools as a result of what happened Friday. They'll make their adjustments, then stage attacks. I suspect there'll be several across the country.

I posted this on another thread:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2969380/posts?page=97#97

The Israelis have guards at their schools, and teachers armed as well. They don’t have school shootings.

Every state here in the US has National Guard units.

Detach x number of personnel per month, on a rotating basis, for guard duty at schools, either in uniform, or undercover. There’s more than enough personnel to put at least one or two guards at all the schools in any given state. If folks get nervous about the guns near schools, then keep them concealed.

We have Air Marshalls since 9-11-01. Use the same idea for schools. That schools are left defenseless “gun free zones” is absolutely unforgivable.

Guys with training, kevlar, and a weapon to interdict a potential shooter - outside the school.

Arm the principle as well - mandatory handgun or longarm training if you hold that post. In ADDITION to the taser and mace scenario you outlined.

The only way to stop lethal force is with lethal force.

Much talk about the teachers “trying to protect the children by shielding them with their bodies” on the radio and TV broadcasts.

My question is this - how are you protecting ANYTHING if you are not armed? All you are is a dead shield and the person you try to “protect” is also dead.

If the libs are to be believed, the US should be the safest nation in the world! In 1968, Lyndon Baynes Johnson signed the 1968 Gun Control Act into law! His statement at the time was...

“Today we make America safe by taking guns out of the hands of criminals!”-LBJ

How did those gun laws, passed in a panic, work out for you America.

Don’t let the SOBs fool you now!

Your post reminded me of what I posted Saturday ..

Obviously we can all recognize that these shooting are happening at what are called, “gun free zones”, otherwise known as (very) soft targets. In the 90s, it was kids who were supposedly being bullied. Now it is people with so called mental disorders. There is another group that is furiously taking notes on all of this. There are people in this world, that have as their sole reason for living, having an opportunity to kill Americans. I guarantee that there are people, today, in Iran and other moslem countries that are looking very closely at what happened yesterday. They see how easy it was for one single shooter to massacre dozens of people, most of whom were children. Our children are the targets that moslem extremists want the most. I’m sure that they can just imagine that if one person can do this much, what a well trained squad of just 4 or 5 jihadists can do. I teach in an elementary school. There are several times during the year that the entire school of 800+ kids, not even counting all of the staff, are grouped together in the gym for assemblies. A gym that has 3 exits. I imagine that this is pretty standard in most schools. Imagine how easy it would be for terrorists, even a small group of only 4 or 5, to inflict carnage on an absolutely imaginable scale. There is not a gun control law in the world that would do any good in such a situation. At my school all doors are locked at all times, but they all have just a crash bar on the inside to allow exit. Kids are constantly letting in people through side doors. Not a day goes by that I don’t have to escort people to the office that have come in through the side doors. There just isn’t enough funding to make every school become Fort Knox. The Beslan School Massacre is exactly what jihadists want to bring to our shores. I fear that incidents like what happened yesterday will only serve to embolden those who wish to perpetrate that evil even more.

This is the correct response to this particular threat:

1. It established the school as a very hard target rather than a soft target.
2. If push comes to shove, you can establish superior fire over the perp within a few seconds.
3. The problem with using security guards etc, is that they have to travel to the scene of the shootings. In general staff and teachers will already be there and can respond within seconds of the first shot or the sight of a threat.
4. The first counterfire will happen in under thirty seconds. Sixty seconds or several minutes is too long and most of the damage is done inside the first two minutes.
5. Immediate counterfire against a perp will slow down his rate of fire as he ducks and tries to protect himself from the bullets incoming. It is a natural reaction and most perps would not be able to override the biological imperative to protect themselves.

The Israelis have used armed teachers for years and it seems to work quite well.
