I don't think the explanation that "the GOP forced us to cut SS and Medicare" would be accepted and believed by the voters. It looks like the plan is to make relatively modest reductions in the growth rate of spending on SS and Medicare, and the modest political cost has to be shared by both parties. Considering that the democrats control the White House and the Senate, the voters will never believe that the GOP forced them into anything.

Sorry, but the low information voters that reelected a failed President will buy that argument hook, line, and sinker. We see it playing out now. Obama has positioned himself as the defender of middle class tax cuts. He wants to tax the wealthy more, which has close to two-thirds support by the public. And the MSM and Obama have portrayed the GOP as demanding entitlement cuts in return for higher taxes on the wealthy and the extension of tax cuts for the middle class.

How many House Dems will support such cuts. Will the GOP put together a coaltion of Reps and Dems to pass it? Yes. And the Senate will ensure that those Dems coming up for reelection will be protdcted and allowed to vote NO. Obama will sign it and make it known that he was forced into signing the bill in order to prevent us from going over the fiscal cliff. He had to be the adult and compromise.

At a high level, it looks like Obama and Boehner are trying to get more revenue through economic growth, as the Fed continues to print money and mortgage rates fall below 4%. Actually, with our ongoing oil production boom and robust automotive replacement cycle happening right now, that growth plan just might work. That growth plan could work, if we can negotiate an end to the Iranian nuclear weapons program, or make a quick surgical military strike on Iran that only drives up oil prices for a month or two. We could actually have a fairly strong economy next year in that scenario.

You are living in a fantasy world. None of these solve our deficit and debt problems. There will be no real spending cuts. The national debt will continue to rise and when interest rates return to historical norms, our debt servicing costs will rise dramatically approaching a trillion dollars a year within a decade. And by 2030 one in five in this country will be 65 or older, twice what it is now.

Oh, and let's not forget the rising costs of Obamacare along with higher taxes. We will start feeling the pain of this program in 2013 and 2014. Does anyone really think that Medicare payments to doctors and hospitals will be reduced by 31% next year? Just as Medicare costs 9 times what the projections provided, Obamacare is another huge entitlement program that will bankrupt us.

Fiscal Cliff is soooo yesterday. The story now is how the liberals are going to disarm America.

I agree with you. There is no way that the politicians will cut spending absent a real crisis. This manufactured one just raises more revenue to feed the beast and kick the can down the road. But we are running out of road.

Boehner’s offer is not a compromise, it is a suicide pact.

John Boehner has become a French surrender monkey. If the Republicans in the House go for this, it shows conservatives the GOP is not the vehicle to use to try to save America. It also pitches our country further into the abyss and less likely able to be saved by any peaceful political solution.

Boehner’s offer is not a compromise, it is a suicide pact.

It's a suicide pact for the GOP only. It will destroy the party and more than likely, result in a third party that will eventually replace the GOP.

ya, we only have the one branch that controls spending. And that house has a mandate to to just that.

The rest is just white noise.

...- Hints at lowering COLA for SS and pensions...

For three years, we seniors/disabled got no COLA raise, even as the cost of living was skyrocketing. This year, we got a whopping 1.7%. For me, this translates into a staggering $19 a month. In the last year, my grocery bill (at Walmart) has doubled, my cable/internet has gone up by a third, and the utilities have gone up by 25%.

Somehow, I get the feeling that the Marxist in the White House seems to think "old age" and "disbilities" are shameful and those who have reached either/both should be eliminated.

I will outlive this traitor's term in office, just to spite his ugly self. And I will know beyond a doubt that what goes around, comes around. I think his comeuppance will not be pretty.

Boehner offers to take debt limit off the table

= Boehner offers to let Ubama and the rats bankrupt yet another generation of Americans (this time our great-grandchildren) so that the Republicans can have the honor of being blamed for both raising taxes AND pushing granny off a cliff ("spending cuts"). That's some great work, Boehner.

"NOW, you're negotiating!"

I don’t like the body language in that picture. The Won is looking too smug, and Boner is looking beat.

And the Won has his LEFT HAND on Boner.....

It's either a Communist sign that Stalin used to indicate a "non-person"

Or some sort of islamic sign ....

I can't make my mind up which one applies.

Boehner is just caving big time. Completely disgusting!!

The only thing left to decide at this point is whether or not Obama uses grease.

>His closet must be chock full of skeletons.

boner’s job is to do what is right even if it destroys him politically. He should man up, do the right thing and let the people decide his fate.

He is very replaceable.

I am afraid you lose me when you said the Sequestration cuts to the military would not gut the Dept of Defense and were a “red herring”. That is completely untrue. Even Democrats acknowledge this. The cuts must come from Operations and Maintenance, because military personnel are like entitlements “off the table” and that is by order of Obama. Google what Gen Dempsey had to say about this subject as early as this morning. the DoD has discovered the O&M cuts will have to be even greater so as to exempt all military personnel levels. The cuts WILL gut the DoD, these Sequestration cuts come on top of $500 Billion in real cuts the DoD has already been forced to make. Meanwhile, entitlements have been untouched so far.

“We are not going to get real entitlement reform and could very well lose the House in 2014 because of it.”

That, my friend is a done deal. We are outnumbered. Period.

I love the picture; it says everything.

Barry: “Thanks, John. It was good of you to hold down America as I raped her, so that you would become an accessory and I would feel more self-justified.”
