DIGENOVA: SAME LIBS CALLING FOR GUN CONTROL WERE CLOSING MENTAL INSTITUTIONS IN 70'S
breitbart.com ^ | 17 Dec 2012

Fox News legal analyst Joe DiGenova joined Brian Wilson and Larry O'Connor on Washington DC's WMAL to discuss the calls for strict limitations on the right to bear arms. DiGenova pointed out that progressive activist groups in the 1960's and 70's moved to make it much more difficult for individuals with mental health problems to be institutionalized. DiGenova maintains that this is a major contributing factor to the latest spate of mass murder. The irony, according to DiGenova, is the same progressives are now calling for strict gun control restrictions.

I've been listening/reading for three days as people refer to the killer as "evil". The man was freaking insane. Severely mentally ill.

The evil in all this rests in the arrogance of doctors and government officials who think they know more about the brain than they do and think people like this killer can be medicated and managed in the general population. They and they alone have unleashed legions of time bombs on US. May they rot in hell.

You are correct. A study was done in our area and, not surprisingly, a high percentage of mentally ill people wind up being jailed because they end up committing crimes and being arrested. It is harder to commit a mentally ill person to an asylum than it is to arrest and jail the same person after they repeatedly cannot function in society. The activists who liberalized the mental health laws and released challenged people into society have contributed to many killings.

And it’s the libs who put up roadblocks so that it’s impossible for gun sellers to check the mental health history of someone who wants to buy a gun.

De-institutionalism in the 60’s was about MONEY...it was too expensive to keep people in insane asylums...there were motives of better care also, but as in all typical fed programs, its starts out with community mental health being 100% paid for by the feds...then every year it went down 10% until the 70’s when not much was left for “community mental health centers” and aftercare.

this of course, coupled with the ACLU demanding more and more relaxing of the mandates that tied the doctos hands as to how, when and why someone could be hospitalized.

I blame the govt who waste tax dollars on stupid projects and local taxpayors who don’t want to actually pay for mental health but squeal everytime somehting like this happens.

I was talking to my doctor today who as a medical student spent some time working at a county department that managed that population. To assure medication was provided and taken they required those under care to come in and collect their $ stipend only after the took their medicine in front of the medical personnel

NO one can be forced to take medication today. Thanks ALCU.

Couldn't have said it better if I'd tried! Bleeding heart liberals are ultimately responsible for letting these people mingle among us and letting the chips (or bodies in this case) fall where they may.

Murders committed by mentally ill could be double what official figures show

Snips from Mar 2010 article:

. Campaigners have called for authorities to stop playing down the scale of murders committed by mentally ill people as they claim official statistics do not record the true extent of the problem.

. Nearly 1 in 5 violent offenders in prison or jail or on probation were identified as mentally ill

And Geraldo Rivera started his career on the backs of mental illness. In the early 70’s he was instrumental in causing the Willowbrook State School in NY to be closed thereby putting all of the mentally ill people on the street. To this day I can’t stand him.

Is it crazy to say the desire to allow sociopaths to avoid institutional settings was purposeful? If thousands og gerard loughners are left to be controlled only by their families wouldnt some of them use weapons and give the left lawfare commies the hammer to smash the rkba

DiGenova is right...the same liberals who want to take our guns are the same ones who pushed for special rights for the mentally ill....foring the losure of mental health facilities...and stopping forced treatment programs

The Mentally Ill have been given Ethnic Group/Protected Class status by the Liberals.

The “Least Restrictive” court decisions through the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, virtually guarantees that individuals with serious problems will be integrated with the general society, and not placed in a restricted environment.

A huge mental health facility sits completely empty about a mile from the school in Newtown. It was closed in the late 90’s. There are a bunch these big facilities sitting empty all over the state of Ct. These institutions were full of thousands of people who needed treatment.

And the same progressive vermin now screetching for gun control/confiscations are the ones who have promoted and protected the slaughtewring of millions of alive children conveniently sequestered in the wombs of dying-soul women. There is a demonically brilliant disconnect between the wholesale slaughter of alive unborn and the gungrabber mentality of democraps now shouting to exploit the murder of these little ones in Connecticut. ... I’m learnign to actually hate democrats.

In Odumba’s world, it’s your civil right to be insane, it’s your civil right to be an illegal alien, it’s your civil right to break the law, it’s your civil right to be a pedophile, it’s your civil right to be gay, it’s your civil right to marry your dog, welcome to liberal America, where what’s up is down and what’s down is up, it’s a kingdom whose king is the lord of flies, a reflection of opposites, a land where darkness is light and light is darkness.

Didn't catch it but have been repeating all day to anyone who would listen that Hollywierd's blockbuster from the 1970s, "One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest," helped slam and permanently lock the doors of most mental institutions and we've had a nation win the mentally ill forced to live on the streets ever since.

Why, because liberals can't bear to think of them "locked up," even for their own welfare!

Liberals insist that people aren't really insane, they just haven't had enough treatment - yet.

When they started emptying out facilities in Tennessee like Lakeshore in Knoxville back in the early 1970's downtown went from safe to it's good idea to carry a weapon in just a couple of years time. All crimes increased downtown.

When I was about 12-13 I'd walk from downtown at the movie houses to the phone company in the evening about 8:00pm or so to catch a ride home with dad when he got off at midnight. I would not go in that area now without carrying. The nearby new car dealership left years ago and missions bought the dealership buildings and several apartment building near by. The sheriffs department past 24 hour arrest has substantial arrest with ones giving the addresses in that area.

Lakeshore aka Eastern State aka Lyons Bend, was for years the regional safety net that kept streets safer. There was also a facility up at the old county poor farm {current county intake center property} but it dealt with criminally insane. The county used to run a nursing home on the property that old building was located on. You could look at the concrete walls and see where the shackles went. It was a spooky place we used it at the nursing home for storage. That facility I think closed in the 1950's or earlier.

"Well it's a marvelous night for a BloodDance
We'll act concerned and maybe get high.

We can can frown, shed a tear with compassion
And like the Sheep, know we're all gonna die.

    (Chorus)
    You know the Guuuns magic
    Makes them all go insane.

    Because of smaaall Peckers
    We'll all end up slain.

Can I have just have one more BloodDance with you
    My Love?

Can I just take all your guns from you
    this time
    My love?"
