It's looking increasingly likely that Sen. John Kerry has the nomination for secretary of State pretty well locked up, and in the event that he steps down, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick will have to appoint an interim replacement to steward his Senate seat before the Bay State can hold a special election later this spring or summer. Ed wondered this morning if we mightn't be looking at another failed presidential candidate as Kerry's placeholder in the meantime, but according to Dukakis himself, that won’t be the case. Via CBS News:
Former Gov. Michael Dukakis says he will not be a candidate for appointment as interim senator should Sen. John Kerry resign to accept appointment as secretary of state.
In a brief State House interview, Dukakis told WBZ News: Im headed for the West to teach, alluding to his annual spring-semester teaching duties at UCLA. Thats a no, said Dukakis in reference to a possible appointment by Gov. Deval Patrick to fill the seat until a special election can be held. Dukakis also said he had not been contacted by the governors office in regard to a possible appointment.
So, “that’s a no” for that former governor, but CNN has more on some of the possible candidates for both the temporary appointment and/or the special election. And, for any Scott Brown fans in the audience, “we may obviously meet again”; it wouldn’t be his first successful special election, but probably an uphill battle after his rough loss to Elizabeth Warren:
Wow, what a duo of creativity and talent - Kerry and Dukakis.
Whenever you’re feeling like you have no ability to do anything except breathe, think of these two complete morons.
And, remember, they are the “best” that dim-bulb-crats have to offer.
And, despite this amazing display of complete oafishness...the repulsican party still cannot come up with something better than Boehner and his ilk.
The poor guy is 79 years old. Why would he put himself through it?
Why should Dukakakakass give up being the head of Flim-FlAmtrak and his huge salary there to become a U.S. Senator who makes maybe one-sixth of his current salary?
Is Dukakis still alive?
God, what is he, 112?
RE: God, what is he, 112?
He is younger than Papa Bush.
The Dukakis’ head to California for the winter. Kitty has SADS.
They could probably do better by picking someone at random from the Cambridge, MA telephone book.
Heck, just grab one of the "street people" in Cambridge to serve, they'd do just as well. As I recall back in the late 70s when I worked in Cambridge, the bums I'd encounter in Harvard Square were drugged-out PhDs.
Clearly, any issue for their Sinator search can be addressed by the legislature passing new law to cover their desired method. Stroke of the pen, new Sinator of the land.
“Are you sure, Mikey? They’ll let you drive the tank again...”
