Obama asks Cabinet members for proposals to curb gun violence
Washington Post ^ | 12/18/2012 | By Scott Wilson and Philip Rucker

President Obama on Monday began the first serious push of his administration to attempt to reduce gun violence, directing Cabinet members to formulate a set of proposals that could include reinstating a ban on assault rifles.

The effort will be led by Vice President Biden, according to two people outside the government who have spoken to senior administration officials since Friday, when a gunman killed his mother and rampaged through Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., killing 20 children, six adults and himself.

The tentative steps ended a paralyzing debate within the administration over how hard to pursue gun-control legislation, which has been a politically perilous issue for many Democrats. There were signs Monday, however, that such fear was abating on the Democratic side of the aisle.

Democratic Sens. Harry M. Reid (Nev.), Joe Manchin (W.Va.) and Mark R. Warner (Va.) made clear that Congress should consider a range of options to address the issue; all three have been strong supporters of gun rights. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (Calif.) said she would introduce legislation that would reimpose the assault-rifle ban that lapsed in 2004.

“We need to accept the reality that we’re not doing enough to protect our citizens,” Reid, the Senate majority leader, said after a moment of silence on the chamber’s floor. “In the coming days and weeks, we’ll engage in a meaningful conversation and proper debate about how to change laws and culture that allow this violence to continue to grow. . . . And every idea should be on the table.”

But any significant gun legislation would require support from leading Republicans, none of whom joined Democrats on Monday in outlining specific changes they might consider.

As if any of his cabinet could find the sum of 1+1 without paying for a clue.

(By the way, 1+1=4, for large values of 1 as 1 approaches 2.)

To determine how they are going to answer,
start from the end goal and work backwards....

Ultimate goal: total subjugation of the citizenry
#1 obstacle: and armed citizenry

I can see this comng from DHS:

first, classify all military veterans and TEA Party activists (aka bitter clingers) as mentally ill and unable to purchase weapons

Considering the commie loons in his cabinets, I'm guessing the suggestions will be.

1. Ban all private gun ownership!

2. Declare martial law a seize all guns in private hands!

3. Do it by executive order, Ignore the Supreme Court Ruling.

The government doesn’t have to do more to protect us. They just need to allow us to protect ourselves. Allow folks to carry concealed or open as they prefer, without harassment.

I'd ask a different question.

Mentally ill suburban Caucasian males are responsible for how many murders each year versus completely sane urban African American and Hispanic males between the ages of 15 and 35?

Criminalizing self defense contributed to the Sandy Hook massacre.

Soon there will be a legal battle on just how far any President can go with an “executive order”. There is no chance the liberals can get the type of bill they really want through congress. In facr most Democrats if the truth be told would prefer note to vote on such a measure. However the Federal bureaucracy reports to the President. If he directs FBI, DEA, BATF to start collecting guns, they will. It will precipitate a big fight in the courts and possibly some violence.

And 1*1 = 2, for very large values of 1, as well!

FWIW I can see the writing on the wall and I sold my AR-15 yesterday for about $150 more than what I had in it. I seriously doubt that there will be a “grandfather clause” in the new AWB. They will ban them all across the board and I figured that I might as well get my money out of it before it became “worthless.”

let's see, there were 12,664 murders in 2011. Of those, 323 involved any kind of rifle (the FBI, conveniently, doesn't keep stats on Assault rifles specififcally). Furthermore, the vast majority of the gun violence was perpetrated by blacks and Mexicans, most of whom probably couldn't pass a background check to legally purchase a firearm.

Clearly depriving law abiding white men of semi automatic rifles will have the largest impact in decreasing the murder rate in America.

“We need to accept the reality that we’re not doing enough to protect our citizens,”

Can we get rid of the DHS then? If that wasn’t enough, how many gd billion dollar departments do you need?

My bet? Within 1 year there will be major strikes across the country by the police for higher salaries and more cops on the street.

Obama will form an anti-crime task force who will recommend another layer of bueurocracy. This will turn into a National Police Force tasked with conviscating illegal weapons and weapons considered to be “assault rifles.” They will do this by requiring a national registry of gun owners and tapping into that.

First order of business will be to go after militias in this country. Followed by a direct political and media attack on the NRA and the Tea Party. This will be followed by additonal laws and executive orders requiring states to put in place buy back plans or lose federal funding.

You all laugh. If Republicans lose the house in 2014 and the senate goes to 60 Democrats, this is going to happen. Add to that a UN Mandate on handguns as well as the continued purge of our military leadership and this becomes a reality.

If I was a narcissistic, white hating, middle class hating Marxist with a race card and media to hide behind and very wealthy backers who are funding this, I would do this in a heartbeat.

then is he going to start pushing for getting families back to how they were, raise their kids as we used to.

Parents being there for their kids and raising them with morals, resepct, hard work and not about me me , me.

He and his fools have attacked the traditional family for decades and now can;t handle what they have sown, no they have to push their agenda even more.

Their chickens have come home .

How about telling parents that marriage is one man and one woman, a child is better off wiht a man and a woman, start raising their kids instead of givng a]them all they want but neevr giving them good advice.

Is now mental problems a child growing up with no guidence, by the age of 6 and 7 he;s a brat but the mother tries to talk instead of discipline.
By the age of 11 he;s acting up so lets take him to a shrink so he can ten state how it;s alright to show emotion, how it;s OK to be different and just express themselves.
By the age of 18 he;s in the real world, can;t handle it because he;s been told all his life how great he is and how he can express himself.

Hell we;ve even got hate laws, anti bully laws to allow freaks to act up now and all in the name of expressing themselves.

By age 20 mother can;t understand how her son is an idiot, why no job and why he;s sits playing vdeo games all the time.

That is now called mental illness, no it;s lazy parenting\

come on obmaa listen to Ronald Reagan and his speeches about family had work, religion, listen ot JFK about what they can for this country and then promote the family
