Obama asks Cabinet members for proposals to curb gun violence
Washington Post ^ | 12/18/2012 | By Scott Wilson and Philip Rucker

President Obama on Monday began the first serious push of his administration to attempt to reduce gun violence, directing Cabinet members to formulate a set of proposals that could include reinstating a ban on assault rifles.

The effort will be led by Vice President Biden, according to two people outside the government who have spoken to senior administration officials since Friday, when a gunman killed his mother and rampaged through Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., killing 20 children, six adults and himself.

The tentative steps ended a paralyzing debate within the administration over how hard to pursue gun-control legislation, which has been a politically perilous issue for many Democrats. There were signs Monday, however, that such fear was abating on the Democratic side of the aisle.

Democratic Sens. Harry M. Reid (Nev.), Joe Manchin (W.Va.) and Mark R. Warner (Va.) made clear that Congress should consider a range of options to address the issue; all three have been strong supporters of gun rights. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (Calif.) said she would introduce legislation that would reimpose the assault-rifle ban that lapsed in 2004.

“We need to accept the reality that we’re not doing enough to protect our citizens,” Reid, the Senate majority leader, said after a moment of silence on the chamber’s floor. “In the coming days and weeks, we’ll engage in a meaningful conversation and proper debate about how to change laws and culture that allow this violence to continue to grow. . . . And every idea should be on the table.”

But any significant gun legislation would require support from leading Republicans, none of whom joined Democrats on Monday in outlining specific changes they might consider.

Lisa Jackson will propose using the Clean Air Act to go after rifle smoke as a “toxic emission”.

Ray LaHood will propose all guns be required to be equipped with a black box and an air bag.

Never said that I got rid of all of my “arms.” So I chose to deal with it my way, while I still legally can. So what? Talk is cheap on an Internet message board. I never said that I wanted to sell it either, but reality is what it is. 0bama is pretending that he is asking his Cabinet for “ideas” on how to go about implementing gun control. This is pure political theatre. He has known for years what kind of Draconian measures he would enact if given half a chance.

I'm less and less enamored with high tech weapons over the years anyway.

Military or hunting weapons with internal mags - pump, lever, or semi-auto - are not classified as “assault rifles”, at least currently, and strike me as much more reliable than the high tech stuff. They, and the low tech AKs and SKS (internal mag!), will be running long after the AR-15s are a distant memory, IMO.

When SHTF, whether government forces or hoodied zombies, ain't no way to get replacement parts of have an available gunsmith to keep the high techs running. And, as the sergeant said in We Were Soldiers, when the time comes, there will be lots of those weapons lying around by their fallen owners if you want one.

My eyesight and manual dexterity, coupled with other aspects of growing old, also make certain weapons more practical than others. They also make any thoughts of going out on extended ops or maneuvers rather silly, and there is no organized group of fellow “soldiers” to practice such ops with anyway. I see mostly defensive guerrilla tactics when the time comes, not pitched battles, nor urban house clearing, at least not for me. Where I live in the Northwest rain-forest, visibility is limited - iron sights do me fine (and after SHTF, the batteries will die on the high tech sites).

For a handgun, I'm a 1911 fan. Small capacity mags, yes, but they won't be banned as easily at first, and I see the pistol as a side arm anyway, a backup weapon, not a primary defensive or offensive weapon.

<“A civilian security force, just as we’ll armed, just as we’ll funded.” Obama in 2008

The commercials on the radio lately for the National Guard recruiters have been using the term "Citizen soldier" to refer to themselves.

Kind of spooky if you ask me.

One can tell what their real motive is just by the words they use.

They don’t want to curb crime or even criminal violence.

They want to curb “gun” violence.

Now the problem is that much of gun violence is a good and noble thing as when someone saves an innocent live by having a gun on their person. By doing so they may eliminate s cancer on the population.

By curbing gun violence they see other types of criminal violence as OK apparently.

Obama should ask respected World leaders for gun ownership guidelines...leaders of North Korea, Cuba, China, etc.

Def. of insanity (same as Dem ideas): Ban guns for a portion of the people...say, “gun free school zones” to create sitting ducks...then when the eventual nut job comes and shoots the sitting ducks, repeat the idea but with a larger segment of the population.

Actually, the Govt should unilaterally set the example by disarming any and all Govt employees, to include cops (they shoot innocents by mistake); military (they shoot innocents); and Secret Service and related security personnel (the President needs to lead by example).

Also, no guns or armed body guards (i.e. Bloomberg, Feinstein, etc) as that sets a bad example.

Try that for say, 10 years and at the end of 10 years, evaluate.

Buy a 10 yard dump truck full of rocks and a slingshot, then you should be fine.

My AR will rust 6’ in the ground before I would sell it. I will risk losing the $1600 + the money I have in the optics rather than surrender to these clowns.

On Sunday, I bought a new shotgun and two cases of shells.

Good luck with your rocks and slingshot.

FWIW I can see the writing on the wall and I sold my AR-15 yesterday for about $150 more than what I had in it. I seriously doubt that there will be a “grandfather clause” in the new AWB. They will ban them all across the board and I figured that I might as well get my money out of it before it became “worthless.”

Are you a member of Boehner's spelunking club?

If he directs FBI, DEA, BATF to start collecting guns, they will die in vast numbers.

There....fixed it.

Nutty Biden heading a plan to stop gun violence. I can’t wait to see his proposal.

The fact that he and obama got any votes shows there are some who really shouldn’t play with anything that might hurt them.
