Adam Lanza's hard drive, which was found destroyed in his Connecticut home, may be beyond repair police say, leaving them at a loss to explain the shooter's motive.
When police first discovered the tainted hard drive, they believed that it could serve as a key piece of evidence in discovering why a 20-year-old man would terrorize an elementary school filled with children. It appears, however, that the shooter did not want his motive unveiled.
"The computer's hard drive appeared to have been badly damaged with a hammer or screw driver," law enforcement authorities told ABC News on Monday. Two other sources reported to a local Connecticut paper that the hard drive had been in pieces.
"He was eliminating [investigators'] ability to figure out what websites he had gone to or who he might have been communicating with," one investigator told Yahoo.
The little information that police do have confirms that Lanza was an avid player of violent video games.

I was thinking that I know that I certainly get cheesed off when my hard drive crashes...but this takes it to another level. I was wondering how this was going to segue into the shootings ... but then I saw I misread the title - so never mind...

The rifle he used to murder everybody was a legal in Connecticut 22.3 pinger used for target pratcice and not legal for hunting large game like deer. Which accounts for the ammount of rounds he used when murdered everybody including those poor kids and his mother.
SSD = solid state drive? If so, flash memory is pretty well immune to normal magnets. Even smashing it with the hammer is more likely to break the circuit board or break the leads off the chips, both of which are possible to recover from if you have the time and money to remove the die from the packaging. Even if you break the chip you might not break the die apart.
The screwdriver and hammer comment might be something as simple as removing the HD from the computer, opening up the drive to access the platters and then smashing those. That's how I usually destroy hard drives when I recycle a computer.

OK, so we have a troubled young man with psychiatric problems flying into a rage, shooting his own mother and then going over to an elementary school to commit mass murder who killed himself when he heard police arriving.
Yet he took time during the course of all this to destroy hard drives so data couldn’t be recovered?
Why would he care? He clearly didn’t plan to be around.
Yeah, whatever. With how rich the mother is, the kid has a phone with a #, an email address, and a slew of social media attached to it. Backtrack through everything and find the forums he goes to. Track through his messages and look for similar signatures and grammatical structures on the web.
The HD just has his web history. But any idiot can reconstruct it once Adam’s username is found.
