Adam Lanza's Hard Drive Damaged Beyond Repair? Motive for Shooting Hidden
Christian Post ^ | 12/18/12 | Brittney Villalva

Posted on 12/18/2012 7:00:28 AM PST by KansasGirl

Adam Lanza's hard drive, which was found destroyed in his Connecticut home, may be beyond repair police say, leaving them at a loss to explain the shooter's motive.

When police first discovered the tainted hard drive, they believed that it could serve as a key piece of evidence in discovering why a 20-year-old man would terrorize an elementary school filled with children. It appears, however, that the shooter did not want his motive unveiled.

"The computer's hard drive appeared to have been badly damaged with a hammer or screw driver," law enforcement authorities told ABC News on Monday. Two other sources reported to a local Connecticut paper that the hard drive had been in pieces.

"He was eliminating [investigators'] ability to figure out what websites he had gone to or who he might have been communicating with," one investigator told Yahoo.

The little information that police do have confirms that Lanza was an avid player of violent video games.

Yeah, it’s damaged...by whom?

Unreleased Benghazi video anyone?

Fast and Furious went bust, so the Administration goes for it with this.

I’ll bet the kid bought into the Mayan end of the world thing and investigators are hiding that, which doesn’t fit into ban guns b/s.

The rifle he used to murder everybody was a legal in Connecticut 22.3 pinger used for target pratcice and not legal for hunting large game like deer. Which accounts for the ammount of rounds he used when murdered everybody including those poor kids and his mother.

Also consider if they’re SSDs. SSDs can easily be destroyed with a magnet or a hammer.

SSD = solid state drive? If so, flash memory is pretty well immune to normal magnets. Even smashing it with the hammer is more likely to break the circuit board or break the leads off the chips, both of which are possible to recover from if you have the time and money to remove the die from the packaging. Even if you break the chip you might not break the die apart.

The screwdriver and hammer comment might be something as simple as removing the HD from the computer, opening up the drive to access the platters and then smashing those. That's how I usually destroy hard drives when I recycle a computer.

OK, so we have a troubled young man with psychiatric problems flying into a rage, shooting his own mother and then going over to an elementary school to commit mass murder who killed himself when he heard police arriving.

Yet he took time during the course of all this to destroy hard drives so data couldn’t be recovered?

Why would he care? He clearly didn’t plan to be around.

Yeah, whatever. With how rich the mother is, the kid has a phone with a #, an email address, and a slew of social media attached to it. Backtrack through everything and find the forums he goes to. Track through his messages and look for similar signatures and grammatical structures on the web.

The HD just has his web history. But any idiot can reconstruct it once Adam’s username is found.

we had a hard drive die on a dell pc. since the computer was at the time fairly new we contacted dell for a new one. now this hard drive had financial info etc. on it and we refused to give it back to Dell (they gave us a hard time about it but finally relented)

anyway we did a ton of research on how to destroy a hard drive and it is not easy... my husband works in a hospital and honestly the best way is to bring it with you into the MRI room as the (very powerful) magnet will erase all the data
either that or a hydraulic press.

regarding ISP addresses and such my understanding is there are some pretty sophisticated ways to hide where you are going...especially amongst the computer savvy kids ( like Adam apparently was) who may decide to go to some very bad places like the deep web ( incidentally a whole FBI unit is dedicated to monitoring the deep web.)

I wonder if they are looking there for prior activity to look for others who may be similarly inclined

Yup...loosen it up a bit. Any time I take a pc to recycle I take a sledge hammer to the hard drive first. I guarantee no one will be recovering data from those drives. Doesn't take a lot to make it unrecoverable.

Because I have heard so much about "destroyed" HDDs still being recoverable, I never throw mine away. I keep the HDDs and discard the rest.

Question and answer found in on-line chat room:

How can I destroy the drives with the least monetary / material requirements?

You've pretty much ruled out the most common and easiest ways to physically destroy your data, but that being said, you still have two routes that are fairly inexpensive.

Physically Destroy The Drive Platters: Go to your local hardware store, and buy a cheap $5 hammer. Smash hard drive until you are satisfied that the platters have even been warped or somehow deformed. Make this step easier by adding in a small screwdriver set if you don't want to smash the HDD case as well.

Solid State Disks rely on a number of parameters to function properly. Each chip works in concert with the rest to provide contiguous storage. If you break or magnetically interfere with a single chip, you interrupt the storage circuit and data loss occurs. With a large enough magnet or EMP generated from simple static electricity, you could easily destroy a SSD.

As far as spinning disk, you are correct. Destroy the platters, you destroy the storage. If platters are intact, even if they’re scratched, SOME data can be recovered.

It would be the opposite of that.

He probably dismantled the metal enclosure with a torx screw driver and then bent the platters inside by hitting them with a hammer.

He smashed it with a hammer to get access to the platters, and scarred the platters with a screwdriver.

A few months back I did about the same thing to a couple of hard drives I'd taken out of an old computer. Used a hammer, screwdriver and pliers to break the metal housing open and then to cut and scratch the disc before throwing it away.

Some are looking for far too much meaning in the sentence that mentions a "hammer or a screwdriver". Most likely just sloppy writing and reporting, which has been incredibly plentiful since this terrible story broke.

Lol. I dunno, perhaps it was the mom who came across the kids porn or something similar and was tired of it and did this. That could have pissed of the kid and then he went Benghazi on people.

Dunno, but some people wanna go down conspiracy road.

LE has had that hard drive since Friday.

Of course the info on the computer was damaging to the Left.

If there was anything relating to conservatism, religion, the Constitution or the Tea Party, that data would have already been shoved down our throats.

Again, LE has had it since Friday. Plenty of time to make sure NOTHING comes from it.

Just another sick, LIBERAL whacko...nothing to see here.

Destruction of the computer was done with the same anger that he used to shoot his mother in the face while she was in bed. Same anger that motivated him to murder teachers and children.

This has since been debunked.

What I've read about the two fathers of the two mass murderers is that both fathers were scheduled to testify at the same hearings, not that they were necessarily under investigation.

No idea what the facts are. There's been so much incorrect reporting on this entire story.

With a large enough magnet or EMP generated from simple static electricity, you could easily destroy a SSD.

If you are talking about MRI liquid helium cooled magnets, then yes you can screw up a flash chip. If you are talking about a speaker magnet or even a home tape eraser then it won't bother a flash chip unless you physically smash the chip with the magnet.

I am figuring that the cops will get a raw dump of the memory rather than just trying to turn on the computer. It always bugs me on police TV shows when the cops just turn on a computer and have only a certain number of guesses at the password before the computer will erase the disk, release some virus or something else just as deadly or unlikely. Idiots! Yank out that disk and make a copy with an OS which can't write to the drive or run any program on it.

This is another leftist, anarchist, disaffected young male video game player. Since he was a child, any masculine tendency has been declared bad and has been medicated out of him. As a young adult, he has become the feminized metrosexual that everyone demanded he become to fit into their vision of society and he hates that society for making him into a virtual eunuch.

Wow. You got all that from some newspaper reports? Have you ever thought of becoming a psychologist? or maybe a fortune teller? LOL

The hammer or screwdriver to damage isn’t the reason why I find the statement odd. It’s the police spokesman saying it was either a hammer or a screwdriver - not both, and not just one, but possibly either.

Odd construction of the sentence.

Personally, I favor a 12 gauge for dealing with old hard drives. :)
