(WXYZ) - Governor Rick Snyder has vetoed gun legislation that would have allowed concealed weapons in churches, schools and daycares.
He vetoed Senate Bill 59 Tuesday after stating that he would give the legislation extra consideration following tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut.
The bill drew widespread criticism in the wake of the school massacre in Newtown where 26 people were killed - including 20 children. Under the proposed law, concealed weapons would have been allowed in schools and churches.
This type of violence often leaves society with more questions than answers, Snyder said. The reasons for such appalling acts usually are numerous and complex. With that in mind, we must consider legislation like SB 59 in a holistic manner. While the bills goal is to help prevent needless violence, Michigan will be better served if we view it through a variety of lenses. A thoughtful review that examines issues such as school emergency policies, disenfranchised youth and mental health services may lead to more answers and better safeguards.
Some in the GOP argued it was a law designed to protect students because the legislation banned open-carry in schools
Michigan's gun bill proposed allowing gun owners with extra training to carry a concealed weapon in a gun-free zone.
While we must vigilantly protect the rights of law-abiding firearm owners, we also must ensure the right of designated public entities to exercise their best discretion in matters of safety and security, Governor Snyder said. These public venues need clear legal authority to ban firearms on their premises if they see fit to do so.
While the governor rejected SB 59, he signed two other bills that streamline the process for handgun purchases.
Courage means doing the right thing even when you are afraid of negative consequences. Perhaps the governor’s reserves of courage were used up last week?
(I haven’t read this specific bill, so I can’t say for sure that it is overall a good thing.)
So MI is going to leave its sitting ducks as sitting ducks?
WTF?
Makes
no
sense
Ping.
How does the state regulate the possession of legal arms in a church, why wouldn’t be strictly up to the church?
Thus ensuring more massacres....
How does the state regulate the possession of legal arms in a church, why wouldn’t be strictly up to the church?
And this guy is a Republican. If so, the woods are full of ‘em.
Ping.
If there are no public schools there can be no public school massacres.
Hopefully the Michigan Legislature will pass the bill again. And again, if necessary. It’ll take guts, but Snyder should be put on the spot.
He’s evidently willing to be tough on unions but not on preventing crime.
You just know at some point a muslim terrorist is gonna get the idea........
Somebody should ask the governor if he is going to travel around the state without any armed guards.
QUESTION: How many concealed weapons were involved in the Newtown case?
Stop Jihad Now!
Nah, don't worry. It'll be illegal to carry a gun into a school, so nothing would happen.
Did you see American Idol last week?
“You just know at some point a muslim terrorist is gonna get the idea........”
Like they did in Beslan ?
Those of us here in Michigan warned that he was no conservative. He’s a pro business liberal who lives in Ann Arbor.
The bill was pretty weak and basically would allow a limited number of specially trained people carry in schools.
Unfortunately I suspect Snyder saw it as too broad.
Before hammering the Guv too hard, keep in mind that just last week he used up a lot of his existing political capital signing the “Right to Work” legislation.
Let the public temperature cool, have the additional studies and hearings. A good idea now will still be be a good idea in the future.
Society simply cannot afford to hire that many police officers or harden that many facilities.
The bad guy (whether terrorist or deranged loner) will always obtain the weapons they need to perpetrate their mayhem and will not stop until they are dead.
Despite the current chorus of wailing and gnashing of teeth about assault guns, etc., in the end, the Liberal/Left has no better answer for the active shooter in a public place than we do: a trained, armed citizen carrying concealed to put the SOB down.
Snyder...the new Milliken
Funny how he had the courage in the face of union thugs to sign the Right To Work legislation, but now has apparently lost his guts.
Another American sticks his head up his a$$.
We had that in AZ. Big, brave Jan Brewer signed Constitutional Carry so we can carry a pistol concealed w/o “permit,” when she was dealing with a primary challenge. She vetoed a bill to allow carrying on college campuses once she was safe. Now, there are public streets in Tempe that run through ASU I have to avoid.
Meanwhile, I carry what I want. Until I had that tragic boating accident on Lake Mead.
He’s going to get hammered over it. Michigan is a very pro gun state among all but the furthest left.
I think he actually lives north of Ypsi near Bill Ford (jr).
xactly......
The sad thing is that when I was a high school kid in the 80s I could bring a gun to school during during hunting season.
The rules were simple.
If I drove it had to remain locked in the car. Guns couldn’t be carried on the bus so if we wanted to bring one a parent had to bring us and the gun would remain in the principal’s office while school was in session. Stepping outside those rules was grounds for immediate expulsion.
Ask Governor Snyder if he is glad the principal of Sandy Hook Elementary School was unarmed last Friday.
I am so outraged by the response of our public officials to this crime. NOTHING is more obvious that our children deserve to be protected in the event of an attack by all legal and ethical means, including the use of deadly force.
What sort of a person could even question this?
What if firearms are a part of your religious observances? At St. John the Reloader, maybe we like to make an effigy of Satan and pump him full of lead. Who is the government to tell us that we can’t practice our religion how we want?
Gee whiz, a hero one week, a total dick the next. Can you believe this guy ? Are there enough members in both parties to override this abomination in the leg. ?
Free men don’t ask permission.
Okay, so Snyder is a coward.
Whatever...
I am getting used to that from Republicans.
It’s good to keep the ban on weapons in churches and daycares - if you believe that someone who doesn’t mind the felony of mass murder will turn back when they realize that carrying the gun into a church is also a felony. Besides, what are the chances that a gun would ever be needed in church?

Thanks to restrictive laws, there has never been an armed security person or off duty cop in the schools that had mass shootings, so there is rarely a happy ending to these stories in schools. Liberals seem to think that is a good trade off, that 20 dead kids are an opportunity to pass the laws they want, not a tragedy that could have been avoided if they had not forced the existing laws on us.
Blech. Those two should get a room.
Thank YOU.
So what? Either your mind is right or it isn't.
I don't give a crap about "political capital".
Override the veto.
Idiot.
That's exactly what needs to happen - arm the teachers.
Surely every school has a last one teacher who isn't a squishy lame-brain who will arm up to protect their school.
They are always “tragic boating accidents,” aren’t they? And why would you be carrying a handgun on a boat, anyway? Even lacks plausibility.
Don’t you people ever get tired of that dead, unfunny, un-clever joke? Damn.
Everybody knows what it means. That’s what makes it funny.
Gotta' make him feel good ~ in a Liberal sort of way!
If he'd stuck to his own faith ~ church of Satan ~ he'd still be alive and kicking. Dude changes church one time and BANG.
I think the Leftwingtards have him in mind when they think of guns in church ~ not realizing, of course, that he himself was always armed.
