The sad thing is that when I was a high school kid in the 80s I could bring a gun to school during during hunting season.

The rules were simple.

If I drove it had to remain locked in the car. Guns couldn’t be carried on the bus so if we wanted to bring one a parent had to bring us and the gun would remain in the principal’s office while school was in session. Stepping outside those rules was grounds for immediate expulsion.

Back in the 70’s I would take my parents van to school on Fridays with my shotgun in the back. After school three of my friends and I would follow our Biology teacher to his small farm south of Lansing and hunt for the afternoon.

During the hunting season I would bet at least a quarter of the cars in the high school parking lot had guns locked in the trunks.
