Britain will be weaker without EU, says USA

With David Cameron now saying a Britain out of Europe was now 'imaginable', US agitation has reached a new high

The Obama administration has expressed concern at what US officials see as Britain's slide towards the European exit door.

Washington firmly believes that the departure of its strongest partner in Europe would also reduce American influence on the continent, as Britain so often shares American views.

An EU without Britain would be seen as weaker on free trade and less reliable on defence and foreign policy issues.

With David Cameron now saying a Britain out of Europe was now "imaginable", US agitation has reached a new high.

After observing the rise in popularity of Ukip and the rise of anti-European sentiment generally, the issue was raised by President Barack Obama in a video-conference call with the Prime Minister on Tuesday. It was also high on the agenda of a visit by a US national security council official to Downing Street and the Foreign Office earlier this week.

Dear UK,

US leadership couldn’t run a lemonade stand.

They are there because they cannot do, produce, or improve anything.

They are slime.

Listen to them at your peril.

The German politicians all want the EU. Don’t be mistaken about that. You haven’t heard a single one say a word against the EU yet, and if any one of them does, it’ll be a fringe politician (and even still, I won’t bet on it). The EU was the idea of Adenauer and his ilk to begin with.

Take a closer look and you might see that the EU has been and is being gradually made in Germany’s image; already started with the social market economy being written into the treaties.

I sincerely doubt that the Cameron government gives a damn what Obama thinks about them given that Obama has repeatedly demonstrated his contempt for the UK by giving their nuclear secrets to the Russians, returning the bust of Churchill, speaking over the UK national anthem at a formal dinner, Moochelle hugging the Queen, and etc.

It’s a race to the bottom. Who will hit it first? Great Britain or us?
I predict us.

The current POTUS has been a Eurobot from the beginning. Back in 2009, he was talking about how he was “extraordinarily impressed” by European leadership and all (because the ones with all the power aren’t elected, maybe?) He also lamented that us other dumb Americans “(fail) to appreciate Europe’s leading role in the world” . . . well, with all due respect to the POTUS, things going to hell in the world has not yet made him appreciate the USA’s (now former) leading role in the world? The EU elites are all warmongers; their role is a harmful one every step of the way.

Obama the collectivist speaks and wants Britain to be used to prop up the EU experiment a little longer.

and the Germans are the dominant nation. Soon all EU will be subservient to Berlin. I am sure England remembers WWII and the blitzkrieg and want no part of it.

Good to know that the Free Traders and Obama are still in agreement

Britain would do best to get out of the EU, and dump Free Trade. Their insistance on Free Trade has killed the British for nearly 2 centuries. In this upcoming Post-Globalist economy, the UK may want to be the ones taking the lead...and not be lead

Oh please, this has been US policy for decades democrat and republican. The UK public would openly tell the US to FO given the chance, it’s the weasel political fools in the UK who live the shimmering dream of a united Europe and the US ambitions for a de facto seat through the UK ‘s membership.

Totally agree with that sentiment. I'm not particularly interested in sacrificing my freedom and individual liberties just so our political elites have a slightly bigger penis to swing about in international conferences. That doesn't improve my life one bit...

Does the US have a dog in this fight? Yes, for the reasons outlined in the article. The USA sees Britain as a useful link into Europe. Conversely, the EU sees Britain as a useful link with the US. This is a point of contention. It is in the best interests of the UK to be well out of the Euro disaster zone, but its in the best interests of the US that the UK be in. Obama made a pointed reference to a threat to the "special relationship" if Britain pulls out of Europe. The comment will not be lost on the British political leadership. Even today, the friendship of the US is not lightly set aside.

OTOH, the special relationship is not so special anymore, thanks largely to the big zero's inept handling of foreign policy. In fact, I think anglo-american relationships are at their lowest ebb since the Suez crisis. Their are signs the Brits are looking elsewhere for global partners - the other members of the anglosphere, and the commonwealth countries (particularly India). Interesting times ahead!
