Important Statement from the National Rifle Association
NRA-ILA ^ | December 18, 2012 | NA

Posted on 12/18/2012 10:56:22 PM PST by neverdem

The National Rifle Association of America is made up of four million moms and dads, sons and daughters – and we were shocked, saddened and heartbroken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders in Newtown.

Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting.

The NRA is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again.

The NRA is planning to hold a major news conference in the Washington, DC area on Friday, December 21.

Details will be released to the media at the appropriate time.

Why say anything? Did they cause these murders? Was the 20 year old an NRA employee? The biggest mistake Gov. Sarah Palin made after the Giffords shootings was to complain about the treatment she was receiving from the press and the nutroots. She fell into their trap. The NRA could learn from that.

I agree. They need to say as little as possible right now. They had better hold the line on this AWB business or they will lose half their members.

Amen. I despise the modern hand wringing that goes on over any tragic event. It merely feeds into the leftist’s delusion that groups are responsible for an individuals crimes.

I figured that was the reason for their silence. As a life member since '86 this is not surprising to me.

I am a member of the NRA and JPFO for ten years now. Everyone could have taken a lesson and I said so to my own friends out of the public eye. Allow the families to grieve and hold to your silence while the left gets more maniacal by the minute. They have already gone into overkill...and they will not win this argument.

>> She fell into their trap.

Nonsense. She stood up for herself as no other scumbag in DC had the decency to do so.

All the #ing Leftists, especially the infamous rodent, accused her of being responsible for the Tucson Massacre. Naturally, Mr WTF went along with it in silence.

I’m glad Palin gave those assholes a piece of her mind. Too bad you see it differently.

At the time, I felt like you do now, but looking back I see that they sprung a trap on her and it seemed to work. She wasn’t the 2012 candidate, was she? She easily could have been, had it not been for that. When going up against opponents who have thousands of campaign staffers and congressional aides, 900,000 paid and several million un-paid confederates in the newsrooms, academia, NGOs, blogs, radio stations and TV/movie studios, you have to pick your battles carefully.

They do not analyze, they verbalize, and you can see the insanity in the direction their verbal onslaught has taken. A stunning number of them have called for outright murder. How much sense does that even make?

FWIW I'm going to join RMGO and maybe GOA soon to get my name on their rolls too. I wish I could kick them all some serious money but I'll have to be discriminating about that.

It make sense to conclude the outcome was a cunning trap regardless — given the vicious nature of the plug-ugly you enumerated.

I’m not surprised Palin opted out. She was fighting the battles alone; no help whatsoever from any political machine. Her departure seemed inevitable. So, in hindsight, I’m glad she didn’t give consideration to political style. She hit back, and she hit back hard. And I’m damn proud of her for doing so.

I truly admire Sarah Palin. She stood her ground. She’s an American icon that few can hold a candle to.

I’ll be the 1st to jump ship. Only reason I remain a member now is because of the head count they represent to politicians. I stopped making extra donations after they teamed up with Schumer and McCarthy to push the “Veterans Disarmament Act” that Gun Owners of America’s Larry Platt aptly named in late 2007. I joined and donate to his organization after that.

I can appreciate competition but I do not appreciate infighting. It's well and good to have Platt and the GOA keeping the NRA focused but, at times, their hyperbole amounts to a misinformation campaign. I like Platt and I appreciate his enthusiasm. I don't think the NRA is the monster he makes them out to be. I think they have done a lot of good for firearms owners and the second amendment..

They are the most visible group out there so they're going to be under the most pressure and, at the same time, they're probably going to have the most input in whatever finally becomes of this. We should be trying to take some of that focus off of them imo...

Haven’t read the other comments yet and there are five, but let me just say, this is the opportunity for the NRA to right a thousand of their wrongs.

Do they have the guts to stick up for the second amendment and individual rights? It hasn’t happened yet in their long history of attempts, and that is the very reason I don’t have much respect for them, their candidate/elected official rating system, their leadership, or their principles, when the chips are down and everything is on the line, as it will be now, I expect them to fold like the proverbial cheap suit.

The NRA literally has been on the side of government through the passage of every single onerous, gun bill against the rights of the American people, and the “shall not be infringed” portion of the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America.

So prove me wrong NRA I dare ya. No I double dog dare you. Show some cajones. Please. You have to ask yourself, just why over four million people have any regard for this plastic banana. “The People” would be far better served by NAGR. An organization actively involved in getting rid of politicians who vote against the second amendment.

I disagree with everyone here who says the NRA should not say anything. As a crisis communication professional I’ll tell you why.

Forgetting for a moment that the NRA is only one of a number of gun advocacy organizations, it is vitally important that they stake out what is left of the high ground. To borrow from an old saying, information abhors a vacuum. In the absence of reasonable and factual information, Obama’s and the libtard lies are filling the void. We already see liberal @sswipes waving public opinion polls around that they say justify wholesale change in “gun laws”. That’s NOT because of the mass murder, that’s because the only people talking about it in public is the lying left. Remember, these are the same idiots who re-elected our POS prez. The NRA and every other org out there that claims to stand for the 2nd Amendment better get their butts in front of the media yesterday.

This is the line and they are crossing it. This is the battle of the bulge and we are losing it. Wait for tox reports?! Don’t say anything?! BS! We better hit them with everything we’ve got or I guarantee you that Obama will soon be banning and grabbing every gun he possibly can.

Do not doubt me.

Thats right. They have to be very careful not to diminish support of 2nd amendment rights at all in the face of tragedy.

2nd amendment rights are designed to meet any tragedy. Thats why they are there.

I have the duty to defend my own children. No fascist or socialist movement will ever take that right away, and the NRA needs to stand firm if it means to survive the cultural wars where politically correct people rush to morph into defenceless sheep.

Politicians have to be very circumspect about this issue. It could start a civil war.

The worst decisions are made often in the heat of the moment. The ABCNNBCBS and even Fox have spent hours out of each broadcast day gushing with misinformation, then information/disinformation, but always focused on the heart-wrenching nature of this sad and sordid event.

Every funeral, every flower, every tear shed will be televised if possible, until the last body is buried, the last pat of a shovel made over a too small grave.

There is no denying the horror or sadness of such an event, as a parent, grand parent, and great grandparent who has had a hand in the raising of all three of those generations, I fully understand the pain of little smiles which will not be under the Christmas tree this year, a pain which will never completely go away.

However, this year millions of other children will smile beneath their trees, or celebrate the holidays in other ways, and in their parent's closet, den, gun safe, car trunk, or other undisclosed location--or perhaps even over the fireplace or nest to the door will hang the very sort of firearms that those who would capitalize on the bloodshed for political purposes would ban. They may even be under that tree, wrapped in brightly colored paper and tied off with a bow.

There are tens of millions of people, if not a hundred million who own firearms in this nation, who got up and ate breakfast, took their kids to school, went to work and harmed no one.

There were still others who used those firearms to defend themselves or others from lethal threats, be those threats human or animal.

That those who appear in a moment of grief pushing legislation which has been rejected time and again in less grievous times appear at the sound of weeping reeks of the rank opportunism of those who could not get their way in any moment of clarity or sanity.

Instead, it is the very legislation they crafted, which bars those who guard our children from having the means to defend themselves and those under their care.

The same people who have thus imperiled the safety and well being of the most precious members of our society--and those entrusted with their care--now tell us all we need to further tilt the playing field in favor of the random maniac, instead of grant the teachers and supervisors in the schools the choice to arm themselves to protect those children.

I recall seeing pickups at our local High Schools, with rifle racks full in the back window of the cab, deer rifles, semi-autos, and shotguns, and no one was shot--ever. It was unthinkable that anyone would even make the attempt.

While there are sick people out there who will find a way to arm themselves, ensuring that those who would defend against them are without the means to do so has been and remains a policy which only guarantees slaughter instead of prevents it.

Further infringing on the ability of the overwhelming majority to defend their person, home, children, and community against those who would wreak evil among us is an idea which is evil in itself.

Were that truly the case, America would have been completely disarmed by 1980, a gun free zone from coast to coast except for cops and criminals. How likely is it that Kansas would have shall issue CCW today without the NRA?

Elected officials could care less about what absolutists think, because most Americans don't either. The NRA can't afford to operate in fantasyland because doing so will only guarantee further erosion of RKBA.

Perfect? Absolutely not, but claiming they're "on the side of the government" is hardly productive. And what they might have done prior to 1970 is irrelevant, as it was a much different organization.

I disagree with everyone here who says the NRA should not say anything.

Correct ... not only should NRA speak on this matter, they should be utterly uncompromising on it. In fact, they should go on the offensive ... propose actually repealing any of several useless gun laws. Start with the 1990 "Gun-Free School Zones Act" (18 U.S.C. § 922(q)) ... then propose allowing and encouraging 'properly permitted' (CCW holders) teachers, administrators, or volunteers to arm themselves while on school property.

Put the gun-banning leftist bastards on the defensive for a change ...
