Dear Principal or Headmaster,
I am sure you are as grieved and upset as I am over recent events.
I would like to know (I am writing to all of my children's schools):
Do you have a policy regarding the use of force, including all necessary and legal force, to defend the children who attend your school in the event of danger?
If so, what is it?
If not, why not, and what is being done to develop such a policy?
Thanks being interested in our school’s safety. All our teachers pack and have been trained.
Spread the word to other parents who are interested in a safe school.
I went to my grandchildrens’ school on Monday. Set the timer on my phone. for 3 minutes, I wandered around the school, peeking in the open doors. Some were empty, others filled with kids and teachers. Many adults saw me. Principle’s office was dark, but unlocked. After my tour, I left. Three minutes is a long time.
Later that afternoon, I called the Superintendent of our district and told him what I saw. When I came to the part about the open doors, with kids in the rooms, I said “You know what a bad guy calls those rooms? Target rich environments”. Of course, he told me he’d been at the schools in the district since 6 MONDAY MORNING (why bother with the weekend) seeing how the schools could be hardened. And nope, my kids’ rooms do not have doors to the outside. I (desperately, I’ll admit) asked if the classrooms at least had windows the kids could go out. He said yes. I told him to plan on hearing from me again. I plan to run this drill weekly till I’m satisfied that I cannot just walk into the school, and that at least ONE adult will inquire as to my business. Sure, I don’t fit the profile, but in this case, who gives a damn about the “profile”?
I suggest a few more folks run the drill. And don’t take it out on the principle, go right to the top. Pressure, people, it’s all about pressure!
All teachers and administrators should be tested for hoplophobia.
An irrational fear of firearms.
In order to get Liberals to understand the reality of the situation re. undefended schools, your gonna have to start the conversation at the very beginning, & carefully walk them through the reality.
The reality is that if school staff are not responsible for defense & safety, then no one is, & therefore, the children are grossly neglected & in serious danger. The reality is that school staff are TOTALLY responsible, & should be held to account for any deaths or injuries.
If this were the case, school staff would insist on armed security on campus, or face negligent homicide charges.
If school staff will not accept responsibility for the safety of the children, then why would anyone send their kids to such a insecure place? Parents should riot over such insanity.
I thought that was implicit in, "do you have a policy"?
I thought that was implicit in, "do you have a policy"?
On second thought, I like your question better.
In addition to being “gun-free”, most schools have NO THOUGHT of defense. I bet most female principals and administrators would actively oppose ANY plan involving the righteous use of force, WHETHER OR NOT said righteous force involved firearms or not.
Yes, the anti-masculine culture of public school IS that sick.
Honestly Jim, his question is worth adding.
First & foremost, do they accept responsibility for the safety & defense of the school, including themselves? If not, then why not? Who else is responsible, if not them; & where are these “guardians” when the killing starts?
This is the argument we must have with the education establishment. They must own up to the fact that as the direct guardians of school children, staff bears the primary responsibility for their safety*. Whether that be accomplished with armed guards, armed staff, or both, gun free schools are potential killing fields.
*This has ALWAYS been the case. They've been slowly shirking this responsibility for decades. Why parents are not rioting over the lack of security is beyond me?
I want to add this:
School officials have argued that they alone may make life threatening decisions for kids in their charge at school WITHOUT notifying parents. Birth control & abortion come to mind.
So, school staff ARE responsible for the health & safety of kids at school, & have insisted so many times. We have to hold their feet to the fire* on this one because that is the only way the kids may be safer.
*It’s just an expression.
OK, how about this? (I think we should start a campaign to send this letter to every school in the country):
Dear sir or madam (insert title and name):
I am sure you are as grieved and upset as I am regarding the horrible recent events in Connecticut. Because the safety of my child(ren) is my foremost responsibility, I wuld like you to answer the following questions:
1)Who, specifically, is responsible for the safety & defense of the children in your school?
2)Do you have a policy regarding the use of physical force, including all legal, necessary and proper force under the laws of (insert your state), to defend the children who attend your school in the event of a violent assault?
3)If so, what is it?
4)If not, why not, and what is being done to develop such a policy?
Inasmuch as this matter is of vital importance, I would appreciate it if you would respond in writing. Thank you.
I like it, Jim.
