And the Georgia workers aren't alone. Between April and September of this year, 171 Postal Service employees were arrested for theft, willful delay or destruction of mail, according to a new report by the USPS inspector general. The Service has about 546,000 employees.
"We have taken two corrupt postal workers, including a supervisor, off the streets who were responsible for stealing thousands of checks worth over $3 million," U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates in Atlanta said. "We will continue to target these theft rings, both those on the inside and their network of check cashers, to address this serious problem.
Gerald Eason, 47, pled guilty to stealing more than 1,300 checks while working at the postal facility. His accomplice, mail handler Deborah Fambro-Echols, 49, has also pled guilty. The two employees pled guilty to conspiracy and theft of government money. Eason pleaded guilty to several other charges including possession of stolen Treasury checks. There's a wide range of jail time they could be serving, though. Each charge carries anywhere from five to 30 years in prison.
Investigators became aware there was a problem in December 2010, USPS Office of Inspector General spokeswoman Agapi Doulaveris said. Federal agents watched and investigated Eason and his accomplices before they were arrested in early March, Doulaveris said.
"Eason and Fambro-Echols reflect just a very small percentage of employees who failed to uphold the trust and integrity placed in them," said Paul Bowman, the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General's special agent in charge. "The majority of Postal Service employees are honest, hardworking, and committed to providing the timely and reliable service that customers expect and deserve."

How does it go? “Neither rain, nor sleet, nor.........shall keep them from their appoint rounds [of theft?]”
In April 2013 most Federal checks will be Direct Deposit. That should stop the federal theft.
Where’s Newman when you need him???
Or shooting their fellow employees.
With today’s banking laws you can’t cash a check (even third party checks) if it’s not in your own name and you already have an account at that partucular bank.
Unless USPS workers are exempt from Dodd-Frank or something.
What am I missing?
Four other defendants, Wendy Frasier, 35, and Daralyn M. Weaver, 31, both of Atlanta; Jabril O. McKee, 25, of Fairburn, and Ohmar D. Braden, 36, of Lithonia, also have pleaded guilty for their roles in the scheme, according to U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates.
...Just getting their fair share, after all...
Yes, how does this work? You steal a check with someone else’s name on it....how do you squeeze cash out of that? Doesn’t the bank require some form of ID?
The USPS hires people by quota, not by their qualifications.
Fake IDs don’t take much to make once you spend a few grand on the equipment.
Once you have a matching ID, a federal check is as good as cash.

Why are there no mug shots? I imagine it’s because they are “Holder’s People.” I hate ever having to go to a Post Office. The “employees” act like they are doing you a favor just being there and they make it their life’s work to make sure that enough of them are “on their break” so as to be certain that there is a line of patrons waiting. Shut it down and no one would miss it. I have read that the USPS ten years ago had nearly a million “employees,” and now they are down to less than 600k. But in truth they need to RIF another 250k and are wringing their hands as just how to do it.
Obama’s people be redistributin
What! No pictures of the lovely couple?
At some point, you’ve stolen enough money. Wait, you didn’t steal that. Someone else printed the check and someone else mailed it.
Obama Clause has his elves working hard on redistributing the wealth.
Did they get the money back??????
You might think this is a good deal that the Federal Government has access to your account, but the whole motive behind this is to control your bank account. Pretty soon they will be debiting that bank account for income taxes.
Plus there is the danger of hackers.
“Eason and Fambro-Echols reflect just a very small percentage of employees who failed to uphold the trust and integrity placed in them,” said Paul Bowman, the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General’s special agent in charge. “The majority of Postal Service employees are honest, hardworking, and committed to providing the timely and reliable service that customers expect and deserve.”
The first part of that statement is actually stating that these people are just a small percentage of those who failed ergo the number who failed is quite large indeed.
I never endorsed it nor decried it. Just stating what my father (who is on SS) got told. He hates it. He wants to go to the bank each month but was told that will no longer be an option.
I’ve had a couple of incidents over the last 5-6 years with the Atlanta postal service, that makes me not surprised to hear about this corruption. The last one was 2 years ago when I ordered a bunch of books from Christian Book Distributors; it had CBD written all over the box...when it was delivered here in Texas the box had been opened and half the books were gone. Someone had sloppily taped the box together.
When I looked inside two of the books had TIRE MARKS over them, like they had been run over by a vehicle! So I took it to our local PO and filled out the paperwork and left the books and box with them. They said they could trace where the books were lost/destroyed. Turned out it was Atlanta.
This was not the first time that books I had ordered from CBD came in damaged boxes, but nothing like this. CBD made it up to me; sent it all to me again by UPS, no charge, just in time for Christmas. I sure felt badly for them that they had to take the loss.
I couldn’t help but think that it was because it was a Christian company. I’ve never had anything from LL Bean destroyed like that, and I know they come routed to our area through Atlanta too.
This is a very small number of arrests for such a large bunch of thieves.
The government keeps sending rather threatening little notices with the checks; people have until March to give them your bank account number. If you don’t do that, it goes on a VISA card. The last notice said ACT NOW. Also, the banks are contacting their customers to let them know that they can sign up with them to have their SS earnings deposited.
Won’t be long until none of us will be able to write checks to pay bills or have checks mailed to us. This government aims to control everyone’s lives.
The post office could have set up federal free emails to protect their official first class notice system. Now ALL the federal courts are email paperless. State courts are following. No need for mail there.
Some ads are actually useful but that is few and far between because the good ones have goine to the internet.
That leaves the post office with express and packages and seasonal cards.
