Postal employees stole millions in federal checks

And the Georgia workers aren't alone. Between April and September of this year, 171 Postal Service employees were arrested for theft, willful delay or destruction of mail, according to a new report by the USPS inspector general. The Service has about 546,000 employees.

"We have taken two corrupt postal workers, including a supervisor, off the streets who were responsible for stealing thousands of checks worth over $3 million," U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates in Atlanta said. "We will continue to target these theft rings, both those on the inside and their network of check cashers, to address this serious problem.”

Gerald Eason, 47, pled guilty to stealing more than 1,300 checks while working at the postal facility. His accomplice, mail handler Deborah Fambro-Echols, 49, has also pled guilty. The two employees pled guilty to conspiracy and theft of government money. Eason pleaded guilty to several other charges including possession of stolen Treasury checks. There's a wide range of jail time they could be serving, though. Each charge carries anywhere from five to 30 years in prison.

Investigators became aware there was a problem in December 2010, USPS Office of Inspector General spokeswoman Agapi Doulaveris said. Federal agents watched and investigated Eason and his accomplices before they were arrested in early March, Doulaveris said.

"Eason and Fambro-Echols reflect just a very small percentage of employees who failed to uphold the trust and integrity placed in them," said Paul Bowman, the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General's special agent in charge. "The majority of Postal Service employees are honest, hardworking, and committed to providing the timely and reliable service that customers expect and deserve."

In April 2013 most Federal checks will be Direct Deposit. That should stop the federal theft.

With today’s banking laws you can’t cash a check (even third party checks) if it’s not in your own name and you already have an account at that partucular bank.

Unless USPS workers are exempt from Dodd-Frank or something.

What am I missing?

Four other defendants, Wendy Frasier, 35, and Daralyn M. Weaver, 31, both of Atlanta; Jabril O. McKee, 25, of Fairburn, and Ohmar D. Braden, 36, of Lithonia, also have pleaded guilty for their roles in the scheme, according to U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates.

I am not a defender of the Postal Service and believe that it should be completely privatized. However, this is a very small amount of theft for such a large organization.

The post office could be eliminated tomorrow and I don't think I would miss them much. Their main function for me is the delivery of endless junk mail and most of that is copies I already got in my newspaper.

Yes, how does this work? You steal a check with someone else’s name on it....how do you squeeze cash out of that? Doesn’t the bank require some form of ID?

The USPS hires people by quota, not by their qualifications.

Fake IDs don’t take much to make once you spend a few grand on the equipment.

Once you have a matching ID, a federal check is as good as cash.

Why are there no mug shots? I imagine it’s because they are “Holder’s People.” I hate ever having to go to a Post Office. The “employees” act like they are doing you a favor just being there and they make it their life’s work to make sure that enough of them are “on their break” so as to be certain that there is a line of patrons waiting. Shut it down and no one would miss it. I have read that the USPS ten years ago had nearly a million “employees,” and now they are down to less than 600k. But in truth they need to RIF another 250k and are wringing their hands as just how to do it.

At some point, you’ve stolen enough money. Wait, you didn’t steal that. Someone else printed the check and someone else mailed it.
